PS My grandparents came from Italy in the early 1920s (maternal side) and became citizens in 1946. They came from San Donato di Comino....He was a woman's tailor....

they look good too. Does Summit ship to Italy? PS they are way cheaper than the ARP, I think I paid about $85 USD back in 2017.

Sorry don't know the company, but the main thing is that the threads are nice and clean. As long as they thread in well, they should be OK. Make sure to follow the torque spec pattern, etc. Since some of the bolts bottom out in a cooling passage, I used Permatex Aviation on the threads on mine...

That is correct about the ARP bolt torque specs, I used theirs not Merc's or GM's. The GM spec is 65 ft lbs, the ARP was 70 ft lbs Torque for the intake manifold bolts on the Pre Vortec was 30 ft lbs

remember yours is a Pre-Vortec, the Vortec started in '96, so make sure they know that, the bolts could be different as well as the torque specs.

What I did was use a vehicle model that this same engine came in, mine's a 1988 V6, so I used a 1988 Chevrolet Blazer S-10 to find the right ones. I like using a thread chaser, it is a safe way to really clean the threads, you can find thread chasers on Amazon. If you can figure out which age...

If you can order from Summit Racing or Jeg's either one is a good source. I bought a set of ARP head bolts at a local speed shop. The bolts are not marine specific, basically the only marine specific parts on this engine are the head gaskets (to prevent corrosion with raw water cooling) and the...

Yes that's the sending unit hole. Sealer isn't really necessary but you can use just a bit only on the threads, I think it is a taper thread type seal.

Ok for the intake gasket question the front & back ledges of the block you are going to use RTV. The way I did mine was to use just a little Permatex Aviation sealer on the water ports at the front & back of each cylinder head. This will keep the gaskets in place while you apply the RTV. Then...

2025 should have a bumper crop of freeze busted blocks come spring

And the reality is, raw water cooled inboards where the drain plugs are way down low is just always a risk here. Bad way to save money. The better way to run one would be at least a half closed system with both an easy to drain heat exchanger and exhaust. Pressurized coolant with antifreeze is...

“I shoulda spent the cash on closed cooling!”

Also leaking intake gaskets were very common in the first few years of the Vortec engines & that will put water or antifreeze right into the cam valley and into the motor oil with deleterious consequences for engine wear. So if going that route make sure to use good quality gaskets and follow GM...

If you do be aware that the torque specs for the intake manifold are much lower that they were for the the pre Vortec (like 10-15 lbs vs 30-35 lbs for the pre Vortec) and I think the procedure for torquing the head gaskets may be different as well….

I thought of doing that with my pre Vortec, I had to replace the cylinder heads 7 years ago because of previous overheat damage. However I just wasn’t sure of all the details of the conversion (such as could I use the same pushrods & rocker arms) and so to keep it simple & avoid problems I just...

Deep Cycle Battery not good for starting??

So what about the so called dual purpose battery? I have used these myself for over 10 years with good results. Main concern is my is moored all season although covered. Still I want to make sure that the bilge pump had adequate pose in case water gets thru the cover which is kind of inevitable...

Deep Cycle Battery not good for starting??

I think if a deep cycle has enough CCA to crank the engine it should be fine. BTW, people forget sometimes that bad starters that draw too much current and old corroded internally battery cables kill batteries. Bad cables also won't allow the alternator to fully charge the battery. I had far...

Yep the Vortec heads are designed for more efficient combustion and add about 20 hp. The FIAT reminds me of the air cooled VW Beetles we all drove back in the 70s as broke college students….

I have had good luck with Deka lead acid dual purpose gp 27s. Not too expensive and hold a charge well.
