5.0 GXi-J fuel pump relay keeps tripping

I am going to offer some advice that you may not like but I am doing so out of concern for your safety. The temps and symptoms you are experiencing are dangerous as in electrical fire dangerous. Hopefully, it is something simple like an over drawing fuel pump. My strong advice is to not take...

New Exhaust Manifold surface prep? 4.3 Mercruiser

Lots of different opinions out there. I ended up cleaning up the paint on mine, see this thread > link

    2015 Mercruiser 4.3 EFI issues.

While its good the engine turns over, the idea of the water in the oil still is an open issue. Now that you know the spark arrestor, etc were in place, eliminating that potential source of water intrusion this red flag still exists. Did you take off the valve cover to see if a long-standing...

Sharing a Pre-Startup Check List > What is yours?

Maybe is a pride thing but when I have talked to the locals it is my impression only a particulate filter. According to this (link), you are correct, it’s a combo or should be :)

Sharing a Pre-Startup Check List > What is yours?

You are correct. One of the aspects of what they do at George is if any water drains out of the engine or they suspect an issue, is to use a hot water flush of the engine. It takes some time, but they are through about it. From what I have read about this, it is the most intensive anti-invasive...

Sharing a Pre-Startup Check List > What is yours?

While I do not have live wells or boxes with drain lines overboard, my experience watching them do other folks as well as mine is one of ‘common sense’. I.e. I have never seen or experienced them going overboard (no pun intended). Example: we had a good rain the night before we were putting in...

Sharing a Pre-Startup Check List > What is yours?

Pulling the plug is a ‘requirement’ when pulling out at Lake George, NY. Every ramp has an inspection / inspector process and they will not tag you if you do not pull the plug. The tag allows you to reenter the lake without inspection. I have asked why that is the case and never gotten a clear...

Sharing a Pre-Startup Check List > What is yours?

I should have mentioned this this process is for when I have the boat at the marina’s dock for the season, not trailering. When trailering completely agree all is checked PRIOR to backing down the ramp which is done by me with the wife keeping our place in line. Then we switch places, and I...

Sharing a Pre-Startup Check List > What is yours?

Like all things, boating is a learned activity and collecting tips and tricks from others is one way to avoid the school of hard knocks. As a part time seasonal boater, I have accumulated only 100s of hrs these past few years but even with my limited outings, I continue to be amazed at the high...

Mercruiser 5.0L MPI Not Starting, I was driving the boat at a slow pace and it slowly stalled/stopped

Thanks for the soft reply to my sharp post. I read thoroughly your intentions as well as the significant tribulations you have undergone with a lot of empathy. And I re-read all prior to my post and realized I was merging your 4 months of a known issue with a recommendation to ‘run to fail’. I...

Piston Rings don´t fit, too little clearance, sits too tight

Bollerwagon, I am now both curious and confused and need your help. So, the issue of fitting the rings is now all set and your shop got them installed by griding the wiper groove on all 4 pistons? I have never heard of that before so highly curious about it. Any info you can share is...

Mercruiser 5.0L MPI Not Starting, I was driving the boat at a slow pace and it slowly stalled/stopped

I am a little perplexed. Here is why > a motor needs 3 basic things to run: fuel, spark and compression. You have two of the three. And short of doing a rebuild of the heads or, more likely, the entire engine anything else is fruitless. That is No. 1 priority IMO and that you continued to run...

    Cross country trailering advice/tips

Short answer is yes, longer answer is it depends. First off, I would look to see if there is grease flung all around (rear seal so look behind) and in front. Then I would grab the top of the tire and with a good shove and pull at the top, see it is it ‘rocks’ aka has excessive play. If any of...

    Cross country trailering advice/tips

Here is how i do it > when towing my boat: at every stop for gas or whatever, before I do anything else I walk completely around both the truck and trailer and feel the temperature of every tire and wheel hub along with checking the straps, hitch, etc. If a particular trailer tire (or hub) temp...

    4.3 efi tbi throttle question

Kallen, Boy this is a headscratcher. Here is a recap to help me understand what I think is your situation followed by a recommendation. Issue: performance of the boat from last season to this is horrible, hole shot is sluggish and top end not what it used to be. Never mind what the gauges are...

no oil after cylinder head recondition

Not trying to get off topic but rather to learn: do most (all?) marinized GM motors use roller lifters? Perhaps that there was a cutover time frame or ? Thanks....

no oil after cylinder head recondition

Just a word of caution and perhaps this is old school thinking and not relevant but when replacing only lifters and not the cam, need to be cognizant of cam wear > a new lifter can tear up a worn cam lobe. Also break in oils and process come into play.

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

The thermostat does not need to come open or be bypassed for water to enter into the Exh Manifolds and out the exhaust. See this post (link) that has a water flow diagram. The t-stat controls the circulation of the water in the block > closed to allow it to warm up and cycles open / shut to...
