Replace or Repair, where to start?

Thank you, keeping mine crossed too. I changed the oil and checked compression on all cylinders without starting the engine. The plugs were old but didn't look too bad. I replaced them anyway. Comp. was 3 at 120 - 4 at 118 and 1 at 119. I back flushed the hell out of it with the lower half of...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

I think the only way for me to know that it is facing forward is to rotate the shift shaft CW until it stops. I don't see anything that could face forward. Here's a pic showing what I have (bottom of the top half and top of the bottom half)

    Plug gap and Compression

It overheated; enough to melt the impeller. It was running great and continued to after it cooled down. I was trying to find out if it suffered any obvious damage to the block, heads... was the reason for the compression check. 120lbs in 3, 119lbs in 1 and 118lbs in 4. This was done on a cold...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

when you said 'shift arm in the upper is facing forward" do you mean in the top half of the outdrive? I only saw a tube that the shift shaft goes up in. I'll look again. Thank you

Replace or Repair, where to start?

What could I have done while putting it back together to cause the shifting problem at the remote. I had the remote in forward position, the shift shaft turned CW and turned the prop slightly CCW to lock. After it was in, I got in the boat and couldn't bring the remote back to neutral to start.

    Plug gap and Compression

Have an older 1984 Mercruiser 5.7L 260hp (repowered 2003) but don't have an owner's manual. Getting 118 -120 psi on the cyl tested so far (six of eight) and all plugs are gapped at 32. Anyone know if these numbers sound right?

Replace or Repair, where to start?

By spin freely I mean the prop spins with no resistance or no effect on the main drive shaft. It does make that click click sound when I turn the prop CCW with the shift shaft turned CCW. If I turn the prop CW with the shift shaft turned CCW, the main drive shaft turns CCW.

Replace or Repair, where to start?

I appreciate your advice nola mike. I need all the help I can get. I did put it back together but then I couldn't shift it from forward to neutral or reverse so I took the lower section off. Not sure where the water pocket cover is but I don't see anything else melted. I'll check some diagrams...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

I did a back flush with the lower section off and found a couple small pieces of what I'll assume to be the impeller. I got the kit you suggested as well as a new base and installed it all. I haven't tried to re-attach it back to the upper section yet because it's a lot harder to turn the...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Thank you alldodge. This is my first I/O. It is an 1984 5.7L 260hp repowered in 2003 with an alpha 1 gen 1 outdrive. You were right, it is not closed cool as I was told. And the impeller went beyond bad. Alot of it had melted to the shaft as well as the inside of the housing. The outside of the...

Replace or Repair, where to start?

Overheated my 84 Mercruiser 5.7L. Didn't notice until it was badly smoking so I'm sure it's damaged even though it was running as good as usual. After it cooled, I pulled the thermostat and poured in a gallon of anti-freeze, and put it back together. It started right up and I headed for the...
