    Tohatsu 9.8 MFS (maintenence/storage)

Really make an effort to find ethanol free fuel, it does make a big difference in how well it stores. I've used StaBil with success, probably any big name brand is OK, but in my experience, strait ethanol free fuel seems to store better than ethanol fuel with stabilizer. Ethanol free fuel with...

Honda BF75 "Making Oil" – Need Help with Thermostat in Cold Climate

The oil isn't milky because the "newly made oil" is fuel. Not all fuel burns, some unburnt fuel gets by the rings. In a hot motor it steams off, the PCV system routs it back to the intake where it eventually gets burned. In a cool motor it condenses in the oil. You can send a sample for oil...

Honda BF75 "Making Oil" – Need Help with Thermostat in Cold Climate

Even if the thermostat keeps the block up to temp, I think your main challenge is the oil sits in a metal pan below the block where it's cooled by the environment. At idle or low speeds there just isn't enough heat being put into the oil to keep it all hot when so much heat is lost through the...

Hopefully the new CDI will do it. If the seller had a lot of good feedback then odds are in your favor that the new one is probably OK. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    Break in oil

I bought a Tohatsu 6HP online about 10 years ago, it arrived empty and with no oil in the box. Side note, and I have no idea if this applies to your motor, but I was being careful breaking mine in and it would burn a little bit of oil (some blue smoke). Someone familiar with the little Tohatsu...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

I haven't had the head off of one of these things myself, but I believe @ahicks has worked on a ton of these. Unfortunately it looks like he hasn't been online here since 2023, I hope he's OK. If you did the descaling rinse, my guess is it's likely cleaned out good at this point.

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

It's hard to say. There's no harm in replacing it, the biggest risk is it might be an unnecessary expense, so if you're OK with that then go for it.

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

In the morning when it's running properly, drain the carbs and measure what comes out of each one. Then when it acts up, immediately turn it off and measure what's in the carbs. That will tell you right away if they're full or not. The gas line is new, but is it "new" or new-old-stock? Does...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

While it's acting bad, squeeze the ball. If that resolves it, then you've got a fuel delivery issue, such as the pump or clogged filter somewhere. If that does not improve it, immediately turn off the motor and drain each of the 3 carburetors to see if they are full of fuel or mostly empty...

    1990 NISSAN NS9.9B2

Unless it's corroded, a new carburetor is likely not needed. For a proper cleaning you have to take it apart. Use the little tube to shoot cleaner and compressed air through every hole, especially the small ones (wear googles). Putting the disassembled carb in a hot ultrasonic cleaner for a...

3.4 gall honda fuel tank fitting

If it's just leaky and you can't find the part, you might be able to extract any o-rings inside and just buy replacement o-rings. If you have a local Ace Hardware (or good hardware store) check there. Our local Ace has a pile of different o-rings. You can measure with a caliper.

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

Excellent! Please report back and let us know how it goes. It's amazing how much crap comes out with a proper descaling rise isn't it! My motor was the same. I flush the heck out of it, usually 15 min on the muffs while I scrub the rest of the boat, but apparently not all of it comes out...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

A few things; the Barnacle Buster is going to be exponentially stronger than vinegar, no need to bother with the vinegar. After you're done with the chemical flush, flush the heck out of it with clean water to get all the chemicals out, you don't want to leave that sitting in there. To flush...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

Any acid will be rough on anodes. Acids take electrons and anodes give electrons, that's why they interact so actively. I left my anodes in, mostly because after 20 years in salt I thought trying to take them out was going to do more damage (broken bolts, etc..). If the sand is packed in...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

One bottle was more than enough, I think I used a little more than half the bottle. We have muriatic acid for the pool and Rydlyme is not the same. I couldn't tell you chemically what's different, but they behave different right from the moment you open the bottle. I understand not wanting...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

I did not know these older motors had a limp mode!? You've got the right idea, but the wrong approach IMHO. I did a lot of research before descaling my own motor. Long story short, strait acid is going to be really rough on the metal in the engine, including the anodes. A buffered acid will...

I have a BF15 HP Honda with a Power Prooblem.

Easy things first, does the throttle plate open fully when you give it full throttle? Also did you double check the shop to make sure they gave you the correct carburetor? Maybe compare to the old one if you still have it, to see if the new one is smaller. Also is that a 2 cylinder motor? If...

I have a BF15 HP Honda with a Power Prooblem.

Are you sure the correct OEM carburetor was used? If yes, it should be jetted correctly right out of the box. If an aftermarket carburetor was used then all bets are off.

2.5HP Mercury/Tohatsu/Nissan Outboard No Longer Starting

Not knowing how much you took it apart, did you put the reeds back in properly? While waiting for the compression gauge to arrive, treat it like it's flooded and see if that helps. Remove the spark plug, be sure the spark plug is grounded or the run switch is off (to keep the electronics...
