1961 Runabout 14' boat with original 40 hp Elgin motor plus trailer

Re: 1961 Runabout 14' boat with original 40 hp Elgin motor plus trailer Does it look something like this 1961 Sears boat package? If so, it could be worth a fair amount to some collector when "restored". I think those Elgin motors were made be Scott At Water?

Bayliner Ciera 2150 with 4cyl Volvo Penta

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2150 with 4cyl Volvo Penta I had one in my second Bayliner(17 ft). It ran faithfully for the years I owned it. It's a fairly high revving motor(4700-5000 rpm) to get the performance out of it. If your check the NADA guide, the 1986 model 2150 Ciera is right there listed...

Prop Load out? What is the formula?

Re: Prop Load out? What is the formula? Another thing to bear in mind with this type of boat is the type of bottom it has. Quicksilver boats have two types of bottoms; a "soft bottom" and a "rigid bottom". Your 430 HD is a "soft bottom", and will not perform like one of the "rigid bottom"...

Prop Load out? What is the formula?

Re: Prop Load out? What is the formula? That chart in your owner manual is only a general guide for choosing the correct prop. The ONLY correct way to do it is to prop the motor so that it operates within it's WOT rpm range(5000-6000 in this case). You must have a ACCURATE tachometer to...

    Prop recommendation

Re: Prop recommendation I agree that a 14-1/2 X 19 would be a reasonable starting point for your Mercruiser 165 with a 1.65 gear ratio and a WOT rpm range of 3900-4300 rpm. That size should work OK for general purpose use. Be careful not to over speed that motor; it's happy running at...

    Spun hub or ventilation?

Re: Spun hub or ventilation? Is the motor trimmed down as low as it'll go? If I draw an imaginary line from the keel past the lower unit, it appears that the motor is not down far enough. In fact, it appears that as the boats comes on plane, the prop blade tips would be breaking the surface...

How much motor will this boat need?

Re: How much motor will this boat need? Actually, I feel the boat(given the modest dead rise at the stern) will not have trouble getting on plane. The Doel Fin was presented just in case. I have used the product on every boat since 1986(4 different ones) and found it to work wonders, with...

How much motor will this boat need?

Re: How much motor will this boat need? It's not an assumption; rather it's a calculation. With one of these on the motor, it'll get on plane. As the photo illustrates, it has very little dead rise at the transom, which made it a very fast planing hull.

good prop without breakig the bank?

Re: good prop without breakig the bank? The Titan is a "power" prop designed to push heavy loads. It is not intended for bass boats. Do yourself a favor and return it (unopened) in favor of a Solas HR Titan3 or a Quicksilver Lightspeed(same as a Mercury Laser). The Solas HR Titan 3 is...

Ventilation on pontoon boat - New prop? Doel fins?

Re: Ventilation on pontoon boat - New prop? Doel fins? The Hydrus comes in 9,11,and 13 pitch sizes. The regular aluminum props are cupped too(at least the new ones are). I have seen many testimonials of folks putting the Doel Fin on their pontoon boats to help eliminate excess...

    Prop for my boat

Re: Prop for my boat Does it look something like this? Depending on the model (center console model is 200 lbs lighter), your total weight might be 2688-2888 lbs, and calls for a 17-18 pitch prop for 5000 rpm @ 37-39 mph.
