    V4 Crossflow Jetting help

I'm in the process of getting a '80 115 back in condition. I've retrofit a set of 1 & 5/16" carbs and installed boyeson reeds w/ the filler blocks. The boyeson's call for downsizing the idle air jet by 5. I've looked at the jets I have and there's no numbers on 'em anywhere. So . . . anyone...

    Helicoil

Chased out the threads on the #1 and #3 cylinder head. On the two inside bolts the threads came out with the tap. Guess that's why I always chase out head bolt threads. Anyway, anything in particular I need to know about helicoiling for cylinder heads?

115 vs. 140 crossflow heads - telling the difference.

So I have a set of what is supposed to be 140 heads (w/ the built-in coil mounts), but damn if they don't look identical to the 115 heads I pulled off. Given who I bought my parts motor from, it's not unlikely that the 115 was retrofitted with the high-compression heads already. How do I tell...

    8hp charging kit help

I got a good price on a charging kit for my 8hp from sea-way today. The great price was because the kit they had in stock was partially complete and had no instructions. Ian filled in the missing pieces, and I can probably figure out where all the bits get mounted and stuff. But, if someone...

Cowl Foam - Replace or just remove?

This is for a crossflow v-4. It's got some deteriorating foam under the cowl. Now, I know this is primarily for sound-deadening. Is it worth it to replace the foam, or does it really do all that much for noise reduction? If replacement is in order what to replace it with? I was thinking the...

    Re-jet for '80 100hp w/ performance upgrades

So, I've finally got all the performance upgrade pieces assembled and the short-block ready to get machined on my '80 100hp. Now, I'm just curious about jetting. Here's what is getting added. High-compression heads Large throat (1-5/16") carbs Boyesen Reeds Bubble-back exhaust (if I can find...

    Adjusting Timer base '77 85hp

Ok, I have the adjustment spacer tool deal that slides over the crankshaft. What I can't find is good instructions on how to adjust the pickups in the timer base. The OEM shop manual is vague at best. Is there a gap I should be shooting for, or do I adjust right up against the spacer tool?

    Stuck Powerhead

Anyone have any tricks for getting a powerhead off an exhaust adapter? '77 85hp is what we're working with. Seems to be hung up on the two exhaust studs. Heat, tapping, four-letter words - no luck. Right now it's sitting in some pb blaster, but there doesn't seem to be a very good way to get oil...

    1980 T&T wiring question.

Just trying to make sense of what I'm seeing in a new-to-me unit. I've got the harness that clearly goes to the remote T&T box. I also have a separate pair of wires coming out. I'm assuming that's for a T&T gauge, but I can't exactly tell from the diagrams in the manual. As an aside, any real...

Johnson/Evinrude Cold Start Procedures - FAQ submission

Johnson/Evinrude cold start procedures This seems to come up quite a lot, so this FAQ is an attempt to capture the common cold-start procedures for the various types of ignitions, and fuel delivery systems for OMC outboards. The following are standard guidelines for cold-starting. Your...

    New project '80 100hp - seeking info

Well I just picked up a Johnson '80 100hp w T&T and a stainless prop for $150. That '80 cover with the javelin badges sure looks nice, it's in good shape too. It's got a ticking noise and bad compression in one hole, so I'm figuring it probably needs a tear down and at least one hole redone...

    Coil opinion

I'm making a list of parts needed for the upcoming '77 85hp powerhead swap. I'm a little on the fence about my coils. They all work fine, but are beginning to show the cosmetic signs of age. Nothing serious, but they are original '77 coils. Replace, or keep? Discuss . . .

Johnson/evinrude adding a tell tale Verified

Adding a water pressure indicator to an OMC outboard. Tell-tale, tale-tell, that little squirty thing -- later model OMCs have 'em and you want one on yours. The water pump is a crucial element in preserving the health of your outboard. It's vitally important to know that it's functioning...

Adding a tell tale to a V-4 Crossflow - and call for others

Occasionally someone does a search and finds my posts on adding a tell-tale, then PMs me on what to do. I never did get good pictures the first time around. Well, here I am doing it again, so I figured I'd take some pictures for anyone else wanting to do this. This time it's a '76 85hp, and it...

    Removing Airboxes

Well, I learned a lesson on removing airboxes. This is on my '86 8hp kicker. Before pulling up for the day I like to run the kicker wide open to burn out any residual gunk and carbon. Anyway, it has been bogging down at full unless I put a little bit of choke on it. I figured clogged jets, and...

    Deteriorating Performance

I'm having a problem with slowly deteriorating RPMs at wot, as well as increasing problems holding idle. We're working with a '77 85hp. Over the summer I've been noticing a decrease in WOT by about 500rpms every 15 or so hours of use. I've also been having to adjust the idle up by increments...
