    Just a simple thanks

For all here in helping me with all the restoration of my '78 18-foot Starcraft SS. And, specific to this topic, my two motors - a 1977 85hp Johnson and a 1987 15hp Evinrude. I'm still working on a water leak with the kicker, but I'm not too concerned with how that will turn out. I took it out...

'87 15hp water intrusion in lower unit

I have a water intrusion problem in the lower unit of my kicker. Tried new seals around the drain plugs to no avail. So, after reading the complete and total disassembly of everything procedures for the LU in the manual, it seems like a whole lot of overkill for plugging a water leak. What are...

    Fuel pump question

I need a rebuild kit for my '77 85hp. The aftermarket kits only show '78+, but all the pieces look like they fit just fine. Are there any significant differences between the '77 and earlier and the '78 and later fuel pumps?

    '77 85hp - Update and confusion

'77 85hp - Update and confusion Well, I've got the carbs off and they're ready to get all sklorbed out. In the meantime I'm looking at the block and thinking hey, I'm basically a handfull of bolts away from opening the crank. So, I'm thinking I may just do a ring-job while I'm staring it in the...

    Electric downrigger operating time.

Just went out today to shake the kinks off the new boat. I've got a two-battery setup and I'm running scotty electric downriggers. My kicker doesn't have an alternator, so I'm running the downriggers off the deep-cycle. Well, the scottys operated for a little while before totally running the...

    Testing out the boat

Well I finally took the new (to me) boat out today to work all the issues out. Discovered that: 1) Air leaks in fuel lines are really bad. Went through all the fittings and found a couple 5/16" hose barbs. I think those are the buggers. 2) I really should have followed my instincts and done...

Low water pressure on '87 15hp

I just got done replacing the impeller. I fired it up on the muffs to test it all out and I'm getting just a dribble out of the tell-tale. I'm getting a small stream of water coming out from somewhere under the powerhead though. Everything all worked fine before the impeller change (go figure)...

    Cable replacement procedures

Stringing in new throttle and shift cables on my '77 crossflow to a Johnson command center. (Okay the front half is Johnson, the back half has an evinrude sticker on it :) ). Any particular installation procedures that will save me a self-induced dope-slap later?

    Transducer wire routing ideas

Mounting a new transducer and the connectors are too big to pass through the existing splashwell drain holes where I had the other ones routed. So, it looks like I either go right over the back, or drill a bigger hole into the transom. I'm leaning toward drilling a hole up high and to the...

    Leftover nautolex scraps?

I'm nearly done with the floor project. I was thinking the next thing to do is get rid of the old carpet on the gunwale tops. I think replacing that with nautolex rather than matching the floor paint would be ideal. That way I don't need to worry so much about filling up all the old holes and...

Project new floor on 18-foot '78 Starcraft SS

The new boat floor is all glassed and primed. Painted the front first, then the back. No pictures of the front until the back is dry :) Interlux non-skid is going over it. But first all the console pieces etc. get drilled, sealed and fastened back in.

    Deck Hatches

I want to make some deck hatches in my floor. They don't need to be watertight since they'll drain right into the bilge anyway. I just want to get access to more storage area. What have people here done to make cheap and easy access to underfloor storage?

    Original fuel tank

Anyone have dimensions, or pictures, or any info on the original fuel tank for a '77 Super Sport 18'?

    Side shelf material

The side shelves/cubbyholes/rails/whatever were covered in a kind of rubberized mat and glued in place. The mat was getting kinda ratty and was ugly to begin with. Now I've got bare aluminum bits that need some kind of finishing. It seems I've got a few options on finishing up the interior of...

Aluminum patching goo - what is it?

While I've got the floor up I'm fixing a temporary patch a previous owner had set in place. There's a nice dent that runs up the aft just port of the keel. It lifted the side up away from the keel and popped a few rivets along the way. I've got most of the repair well in hand but I've got a few...

Dropping in a new floor questions

Well, my replace the bow benches project has quickly turned into a replace the whole floor project. Yeah, I pretty much knew it would. The floor was still serviceable, but the old carpet was essentially just holding water against the wood in the floor. It was pretty soft and I couldn't see...

    Another V-4 85hp question.

When I dropped the LU (and let me tell you, those fasteners were good and solidly corroded in there, what fun that was.) The two plastic water tube guides were missing. Should I bother tracking down replacements? Seems like these just make putting it all back together that much easier. But not...

    Installing a tell-tale on '77 Johnson 85hp

While I'm busy doing some long overlooked maintenance by the previous owner I figured I may as well install a tell tal while I have thing apart. Is there an existing hole on the motor that can be used, and if so where?

    '77 Johnson 85hp weak spark

Model number is 85EL77S Well, I went and bought the boat I was looking at with the 85hp. Everything checked out fine (exception below) - compression even on all cylinders lower unit oil nice and clear, etc. Took it out on the river and everything ran fairly well (needs a tune up). When I went...

    Boat shopping

This weekend I'll be looking at a 1978 18' Starcraft. Not sure of the model but here's the features: Aluminum hull, open bow, walk through windshield, (I don't know the beam.) It has an 85 evinrude v4. I'm wondering a couple of things. What model(s) could this be? How well matched is the...
