Installed new trim pump/resevoir, just fill it and go?

Just had to replace my trim pump, got the whole thing new, pump, motor, and resevoir. Question is, do I just fill it and run it, or do I need to do anything special, any priming involved? This one has no bleed screw, so it bleeds itself running it up and down numerous times right?

    Substitute for Special Lube 101?

Is there a substitue grease I can use in place of Merc Special Lube 101? Not only is that stuff pricey, but I can't seem to find any locally. Also while I got the drive off, what's best for greasing the ujoints? I got some Yamaha Marine grease in the gun right now but looks like I'm gonna need...

    Permalube Gimbal brg?

Just got a Merc OEM transom seal kit, opened up the box to look at the new gimbal bearing, started turning the tolerance ring to find the grease hole, must've turned that ring all the way around at least 5 times, NO HOLE! Figured I better read the enclosed sheet before panic set in. Well...

Merc Oildyne Trim Pump trying to fix...

Removed trim pump due to oil from the resevior getting up into the electric motor, following Merc manual to take pump unit apart to replace seals, and I stripped one of the dang screw heads! They are a wierd star type head and the manual says to use a 3/16 socket, which I did but still managed...

    Another Trim Pump Motor AGAIN!?

Well, I replaced my trim pump motor last year cuz the old one (and that one was only a year and a half old) started acting funny, 3-5 seconds of grunting hesitation before it ran smoothly. Now, not even 1 season on the new one and it is doing the same thing as the old one! While I was dealing...

Pulled Drive off, gear oil in drive shaft bellows

Just pulled drive off and brownish green gear oil came running out and is puddled in drive shaft bellows. I assume it's not supposed to be in there. Where would it be leaking? Somewhere in the gearcase? Drive shaft and U joints look good, no rust, but they are covered in gear oil too. That's not...

    Bellows or Exhaust tube?

Gonna pull my drive soon and see what needs fixin. I'm gonna replace gimbal bearing and bellows and I've read lots of posts saying what a pain the exhaust bellows is to install and to go with the exhast tube instead as it is much easier. This will be my first time pulling the whole drive, I've...

Green gear oil in bilge, where does it come from?

Found a small puddle of green gear lube in the bilge right under the motor/oil pan. Cleaned it up and I can see it's dripping from just behind the engine. Tried to get a mirror up in there but just can't see it. I know gear oil goes in the bottom of lower unit and I thought it stops up at the...

    Anyone ever do this?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ever done this (at least I hope not!). I had my boat out first time this season out at the river in AZ and ran it for 2 whole days with the muffs still on the lower unit! Boy did I feel like a moron when I pulled the boat out end of day 2 and only...

Oil inside trim motor, fixable or toast?

Found out why my trim pump motor was sounding and working strangely. Took it apart and found oil inside, probably due to it being half submerged in water last year. I already have a replacement, but is it fixable, or should I toss it? Also, there is oil underneath the trim motor where the motor...

Trim pump problem fixed, sort of...

Found out I did have a bad down solenoid on the trim pump so I replaced both up and down solenoids, re-cleaned everything up real real good and put it all back together today. Good news is that it works. Bad news is that it still takes a couple of seconds after hitting the switch for it to...

    Trim motor sounds strange.

Ok, I found that I do have a bad solenoid, so I am replacing it. I hooked up the trim motor directly to the battery (solenoid is on order) so I could lower the drive. It works but sounds kinda strange on first contact, it doesn't respond immediately, seems to stumble and kicks in full bore after...

What fluid is in trim pump? Looks like oil.

This may be a dumb question. The Merc manual just sez "Power Trim and Steering Fluid", but to me it looks like amber motor oil. So before I go putting the wrong stuff in there (cuz it's a bit low), someone plz drop me a hint? I had the motor and resevior replaced about 2 years ago and haven't...

    1966 650 Merc shortshaft

I have a 1966 650 Merc that needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Two problems: 1. I can't find anyone to rebuild this old merc. I understand it's very hard to find parts. 2. I'm told they don't make shortshafts over 40 horsepower any more. The 650 is 65 horsepower and I would like to keep enough...

Whats a good way to clean inside corroded trim limit connectors?

Still troubleshooting why my drive won't go up or down, testing and cleaning connections. I pulled the trim limit connectors apart and cleaned the male ends and can see some light corrosion in the female ends, but how the heck do I get anything in there to clean it? Q tip with something on it...

    Alpha 1 trim not working

1989 4.3 Merc alpha 1 with oildyne trim pump, getting the boat ready for season and operating the trim, I am getting nothing, no solenoid clicks. Freshly charged battery, but neither up/down switch or trailer switch does anything. Trim motor is only year and a half old and can't have more than...

    Tried something new (or not?)

After reading alot of posts on muffs, I decided to take a good look at mine and saw that the hole the water goes thru ain't that big, so for my own piece of mind and I'm sure this has been done by alot of you guys, I dropped my drive down into a large Rubbermaid tub that is just big enough and...

Therm housing tiny hole, plug it with?

I have the thermostat housing you can't get anymore unless I get lucky and find one on eBay or one of you guys has one laying around. Its on a Merc 4.3 1989 vintage. The hole is tiny and I don't see it leaking while it's running, only a small drop comes off when I put my finger on it after it...

    Heating problem solved!

Ok, after having the heads done/valve job/ and putting it all back together with new manifolds/risers, themostat, hoses, water circ pump, impeller, plugs, dist cap/rotor...ran it on the muffs, it purred like a kitten but noticed the temp gauge kept going up after usually stopping at mid point...

    How to backflush impeller debris?

I've been reading old posts on overheating and think I might have to backflush my system. How do you do it? Hook up a garden hose to the incoming hose to the thermostat housing and back out thru the outdrive? Does the lower unit or whole drive need to off to do this? I am going to check first to...
