Magneto experts needed ('68 Johnson 9.5hp top cyl intermittent spark)

I picked up a fairly clean 1968 Johnson 9.5hp yesterday, and after adding fresh gas and putting it in a test tank, she started right up. Well, sort of. Ran rough, raw fuel was coming out the exhaust, and then died when throttled down. I checked spark (inline spark tester, air gap) and got spark...

Anyone with a "big" motor on their Starcraft?

I'm thinking about re-powering. Anyone have a motor on their aluminum Starcraft that's close to (or over) the max HP rating? My plaque says 150hp, but that was when engines were rated at the crank. Newer engines are rated at the prop. I'm thinking a newer 150 would be too much for the boat.

Newer 150hp outboard on an older 150hp rated boat

My '79 Starcraft is rated for a 150hp outboard (max), but this was when engines were rated at the crank. Used 150's seem to be popular here. Don't see too many between a 150 and a 115 for sale. Of course, anything would be quicker than my 60! (which I'm not at all disappointed with - but I...

DIY ladder ideas? (EDIT: now with pics of my homebuilt ladder)

I don't like the thought of spending $80 on a ladder that may or may not work with the sun deck I'm thinking of building. I saw ezmobee's "modified" extension ladder, and like the idea, I just don't have a spare ladder to cut up. I'm thinking 3/4" conduit, with fittings, or pressure treated...

    tilt/trim pump rebuild

Well, finally got the motor running right (first successful lake test was yesterday!) but noticed my trim won't hold position for more than a few minutes. It's always leaked a little oil, too. So, it looks like there isn't a "kit" to replace all the seals on these, but instead just 4 (or 8)...

    '94 750xi "free revs"

Last season, I (we) hit a sandbar and the engine "free revved" (RPM's shot up real high and kill switch wouldn't work). Only way to get the engine to back down was to get it off the sandbar. A few trips later, I was clearing out the insides by starting it in the parking lot after pulling it...

    Leak down test procedure (???)

I'm trying to do a leak down test on my '85 60hp Merc 2 stroke (suspected cracked water jacket). I bought this: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94190 With these instructions: http://www.harborfreight.com/manuals/94000-94999/94190.pdf Excerpt: "4. Position...

Calling all ignition experts - bad trigger? ('85 60hp Merc)

Short story long, bought this motor and never had it run right. Symptoms: It starts fine, idles fine, and idles in gear fine. It will run WOT for between 30 sec and 5 min, then quit and be hard to start. After it starts, it will limp home idling, but give it any more throttle and it will die...

    Should I check it out? 1970's Merc 90 w/ controls $150

Don't really need another motor, but this sounds like a good deal... maybe just to keep as a spare. No tilt/trim. Won't run (no spark); shop he took it to said it had "good" compression (but didn't have the #'s), and they replaced the stator. He's about an hour away from me. Is it worth...

Could a weak ignition cause this? (updated with test results)

EDIT: [Scroll down for test results] '85 60hp 2-stroke. I'm beginning to think my bogging problem isn't fuel related, since I've replaced just about everything on the fuel side. Motor starts and idles fine. Hit full throttle and RPM's jump to around 5K for a few seconds, stumbles a little...

Water through fuel pump - Help! (Pics)

1985 Merc 60hp. Compression's 100/110/110 While changing the fuel pump diaphragm and gaskets, I noticed water came out of the hoses going to the crankcase. At the time, I dismissed it as a fluke and reassembled. Lake test allowed us to run up to WOT for about 30 seconds, then would only idle...

'85 Merc 60 leaves me stranded twice!

Twice now this engine has run fine from the dock, then quits in the middle of the lake after about 5-10 minutes of running at 80-100% throttle. This is after warming up in the driveway for 20 minutes before launching. After it quits, we got it to "limp" back to the dock by idling in gear. Any...

    Flush out cooling system?

So in a bonehead move, I got stuck on a reef (of mud) out on the lake yesterday, going full throttle in about 2' of water. After moving the ski, I noticed that the tell-tale water stream wasn't flowing nearly as much as usual. So, made it back to shore and ended our day out. How can I flush...

    '85 60hp won't rev past 3000

Took the boat out for the first time today. Starts fine, idles fine. Acceleration was a little "jumpy" and would surge. At full throttle, got to 4400 RPM, 27 MPH (so... underpropped?) Then, engine cut off. Restarted, then would only get to 3000 rpm at full throttle, 12 mph. Sprayed gas...

    '85 Merc 60hp compression 90/100/100

<deleted misc rambling due to me not being able to get it started> We'll take her out on the lake and see how she does, then worry about the numbers.

1985 Mercury 60HP - what do these wires do? (pics)

Just got done replacing these tonight - soldered the new wires to the old at the stator (is that the stator on the top?). All other wires look good. Motor's never been in salt water (I think....) Motor ran like this, by the way. 1) What is the function of these 2 wires? 2) What would make...

'85 Merc 60hp Trim lock out wiring

The trim switch mounted near the port trim cylinder - how does it get wired in? Also, anyone know where to buy a replacement trim switch (at the control lever)? Can't find one anywhere. I have the "Quicksilver" controls.

    '83 Evinrude 150 for $250 - worth it?

Someone talk me out of driving 2 hours to go pick this up. Motor's from Key West, so it was used in salt water. Needs coils and wires - they were damaged when moving the motor - says it should run other than that. Has SS prop, hydraulic steering (which I'll remove), and tilt/trim works...

1979 18’ Starcraft Supersport Resurrection (warning – lots of pics)

I couldn?t have made it this far without the input from the iboats forums, so figured I?d post some of my experience with my first boat restoration in the hopes someone else can learn something from it. I?ve always wanted a boat, and it?s tough find a decent sized boat, motor, and trailer that...
