1983 merc. small block chevy 228, alpha 1 gen 1 shift shaft inner cable removal..uggg! please help

I have a similar setup in my boat, square brass set screws. Remove them and then the plastic outer sleeve slides off, right? Do you have a stainless inner sleeve that has the brass barrel nut on it? The stainless sleeve is threaded into the end of the shift cable shell and secured with a jam...

    Power steering troubles

Here's a pic of the power steering gear. Does anyone see anything odd that could be contributing?

Thanks Chris. Anyone have a safe link for a free download of manual #4?

    Power steering troubles

I've read that the control valve may be the same as early Corvettes. There are some rebuild kits available. Thinking about tearing the control valve apart, anyone done it?

    Power steering troubles

Disconnected the pressure line from the actuator, put a clear tube onto the pressure line and ran into a bucket. Spun the pump with a drill on 0-600 rpm setting. Vanes engaged at I'd guess couple hundred rpm, put some load on the drill and quickly drained the reservoir. Is the actuator...

    Power steering troubles

I can put one together if I can figure out what the pressure line fittings are.

    Power steering troubles

81 Searay with a 228. Splashed this week for the first time in 15 years. Power steering doesn't seem to be working. Basically feels the same steering whether engine is running or not. I disconnected the cable from the actuator, the helm and cable are free and smooth. Disconnected the...

    Lower shift cable behavior?

First things first, I tried to add my serial numbers to my signature, let me know if you can see them. 1981 228. I am familiar with and have printed the shift cable adjustment procedure, currently at 6" and assuming that is correct for my drive. I am getting the expected lock and ratchet...

    Pre Alpha Trim Sender/Limit Upgrade?

I'm confused by this, are there different senders for different drives? Most of the descriptions I see say they fit from MC1 through Bravo. I need trim senders for my 1981 228.

    Log exhaust elbow installation?

That SS plate was sandwiched between gaskets between the manifold and elbow. Factory raw water cooling , open system, no A/F.

    Log exhaust elbow installation?

I pulled off my exhaust elbows to see how they looked and was fortunate to find no signs of gasket surface deterioration or leaking, so ready to reassemble once I order parts. I have log style manifolds with raw water cooling, are the stainless plates typically reused or replaced? Are OEM...

    Gimbal bearing dimensions

I'm mainly concerned with where the drive shaft o-rings sit relative to the inner race. If I use this bearing I will probably reinstall it with the "long" side of the inner race facing the u-joints as that would most closely match the original bearing.

    Gimbal bearing dimensions

I pulled the bearing to get some measurements. New unknown bearing from a Sierra box within a few thousanths of the original housing outer diameter. New housing width or depth 1.030" vs 1.088" on old housing, or about 0.058" less than old housing. Inner race depth of new bearing is 1.180" vs...

    Gimbal bearing dimensions

I don't remember any dots on the bearing. Maybe it was a Chinese knockoff in a Sierra box, hard to say. I'll probably have to pull it and get better measurements because this is not sitting well with me. I'll update you guys when I have something to share.

    Gimbal bearing dimensions

Thanks for the input. I got a Sierra bearing in a parts lot, the box says 18-2100K. There's no way to know for sure since it wasn't a sealed package. Craigslist deal. The width or depth of the inner race in the direction of the shaft axis is around 1/8" less than the original I pulled out...

    Gimbal bearing dimensions

I have installed a permalube Sierra gimbal bearing and was under the impression that they were pretty much dimensionally equivalent regardless of brand. This bearing went in easier than the 40 year old original bearing came out. When assessing the alignment I realized that the alignment was...
