Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

Yeah I realize what I have isn’t ideal but I’m not sinking any money in. I have exactly what I need to swap it to the proper gear set. I love this boat, the engine is a good runner and everything works great as far as the leg is concerned. It’s just geared a little too high to get to its proper...

Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

Whatever man, it’s an old electric shift omc stern drive. You know the info, if you have any advice that’d be great.

Okay I’ll see if I can disconnect them further up

Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

Cool, well that’d be relatively easy. Other than the fact that I’m gonna have to cut that wire some where to take it off. The guy before crimped and shrink’d them together

Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

Yeah I looked up the gear ratios on the two and they’re really not far off from each other. The 140 has a 19-20 gear set and the 165 has a 21-19 gear set. It doesn’t seem to bog down or anything on the water, just won’t go over 3200 rpm. The 165 leg is in waaaaay better shape so thats why I’m...

Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

I bought a boat with a 3.0 140 and the guy previous swapped the outboard to a 165, I’m not sure this is okay. He gave me the old 140 outboard. The 140 has a damaged lower gear casing (the fin is broken off) but the internals are fine. Can I take the internals out of the 140 lower unit and swap...

    Did I over prop?

Would it be possible to swap the lower gearing from the 140 lower unit into the lower gearing in the 165? I just realized The 140 has a damaged fin on the bottom of the unit. I’d imagine the upper gearing would have to be swapped out as well

    Did I over prop?

Shoot okay, I’ll cancel the order. It’s a165 stringer on a 140 horse engine. Not sure why he changed it but he gave me the old 140 stringer when he sold it to me

    Did I over prop?

Hi there, I just ordered an aluminum 21 pitch prop for my 80s StarCraft holiday with the 3.0. The guy that owned it before me tossed a 165 stringer on in place of the 140 stringer, I’m not sure what the difference is but that’s beside the point. My WOT as it sits with a 17 pitch prop is around...

1980 StarCraft 181 holiday power upgrades

17p on it now, came with a 19p aswell. The 19p needs a repair but he said it worked better. 3500 did seem low to me, felt like it should have a little more go, I was sorta wondering if maybe the last guy cranked the throttle cable down a bit may

1980 StarCraft 181 holiday power upgrades

I just bought a 18.5 foot 1980 StarCraft with the 3.0 omc power plant. The boat is aluminum and weights around 960 pounds from what I understand so the little engine pushes it pretty decent (goes around 35mph full throttle and trimmed up). I’d just like to know what I could do to get a little...
