    1970 33hp Johnson charging?

I was just wondering about this and thought I'd try to get some opinions. I know this motor came out with a belt-driven generator as an option but mine didn't get it. Is there any possible way to add a rectifier so I can charge the battery? Could it wired somehow even though the motor doesn't...

How to install tell tale 85ESL73M

I know I'm gonna have people saying I don't need one but I want one. That said, doe anyone know a good spot to drill and tap a tell tale into this motor. It looks like there is an un-used boss on the starboard side just under the first coil and a little forward. But it is actually behind the...

    85ESL73M motor height

I've read all kinds of posts on here that say the anti-cav plate should be even or maybe 1/2" above bottom of keel. I just mounted the motor today and have it 1/2" above keel. Then it occurred to me that the tips of my prop are only 1/2" away from the bottom of anti-cav plate. Now if that plate...

    Tilt position...or run position

I normally run my motors with the manual tilt lever in the tilt position so that if hit something under the surface the motor will tilt instead of being rigid. As far as I can tell is with the lever in the run position it just locks the motor to the tilt pin so that in reverse the motor doesn't...

    85ESL73M shock absorbers

Hello again. I have some questions about the shock absorbers on my 85 horse. This is my first motor equipped with these so I don't know how to tell if they're bad or not. The motor is not mounted yet, it's still hanging from a tree. When I try to move the transom bracket up and down it is very...

    85ESL73M shift rod

I give up guys... I just got this old motor and ordered a manual but haven't gotten it yet. the PO said the impeller was just replaced but I wanna put a new one in anyway. Problem is I can't see where to disconnect the shift rod to drop the lower unit. Everything else is loose and the leg will...

1975 merc 850 spark test help

I have this old 85 horse I wanna try to get running. I am more into OMC's so I'm not sure where to start on this merc but it was given to me so...here I go. Compression is good at 140-145 on all four cylinders. I tested the spark as I would on an OMC and got nothing. Maybe you do it differently...

    Need help with numbers please

Hello everyone. Please forgive an OMC guy for being here but... I did own a merc 35 a few years ago and now I need help with another motor. An 85 hp merc was given to me (no lower unit), it turns free and I wanted to see what it might cost to bring it back to life. Assuming compression is good...

How do you check out a lower unit?

This question is not specific to any application. I see a lot of ads for outboards that need a lower unit or for lower units by themselves. I was just wondering how you would check out a used lower unit to ensure you're getting a good one. Is it as simple as it not leaking and the driveshaft...

    135 Johnson...electric shift???

I've been looking at an early 135 Johnson on Craigslist. I don't know the exact year. As near as I can tell they were only made from 1973 thru 1976. Could any of those years have been early enough to have had electric shift?:scared:

    1974 Johnson 50 hp...no fire on #1

Hello again. My Johnson 50ESL74M has intermittent, but mostly no fire on #1 cylinder. I had a blown head gasket and fixed that but this problem was already occurring so I know I didn't cause this while working on it. Here's what I know and what I think... I have fire at #2 so I know there is...

    74 Johnson 50 low compression

Re: 74 Johnson 50 low compression You guys were exactly right...blown head gasket. Sure was scared, I've already been on craigslist looking for another motor. I can handle a couple gaskets and a fresh thermostat a lot better than another motor. Thank you Joe and bonz_d.

    74 Johnson 50 low compression

I have a 74 Johnson 50ESL74M that I can't get to run long enough to adjust everything. I already know it has low compression on one cylinder, 90 lbs on one, 150 on the other. Could this be the cause of it not running good or should it still run with those numbers? I've been told it should still...

    1970 Starcraft

Hello everyone, new on this forum. I know most everyone here is partial to the aluminum Starcrafts but maybe I can get some answers anyway. I just picked up a fiberglass model for free. All I am able to find out is the year...1970. It is just under 17". Can anyone tell me what model it is? Is it...

    50ESL74M no cranking

While fine tuning carbs I lost cranking power. I can cross the solenoid and it will fire. I swapped a known, good solenoid...nothing. A known, good harness and key switch...still nothing. I'm guessing power pack but I really don't know. Any better ideas?
