1990 Force outboard lower drive issue question

Gica as I see you have the OEM service manual OB4642, read through the chapter 5A about the gear housing. It covers the "old" Chrysler/Force LU which is a single drive shaft LU with no exhaust thru prop shaft, the "new" two piece drive shaft with no exhaust thru prop shaft and two piece drive...

    Stubborn To Start 1979 9.8

Is this a Walbro or Tillotson carb? Chrysler used those two carb manufactors and they had this style gasket at the main nozzle and fuel bowl. Important that the gasket is in place.

    Stubborn To Start 1979 9.8

Does it jump spark 3/8 in or more in atmosphere? Check the flywheel key if it is shared. My experience from ealier (1973-1977) 7,5, 9,8 and 20Hp is that the ignition coils dry out in the insulation in the coil. Under load/compression and when the coil has to jump a large distance the spark jump...

1990 Force outboard lower drive issue question

Jerry I have the factory service manual OB4642 for 85, 90, 120 and 125Hp 1988 through 1991. OB4643 for the 150Hp 1988 through 1991 and I have the OB4527 9/89 for LU 85-150Hp. Shimming these LU is not the same steps as "regular" shimming with dial indicator as the older Chrysler one piece LU or...

    Starter getting only 4 volts

As alldodge says check all cables, terminal lugs and grounding. If you try to run the starter direct from the battery with jump cables with clamps you have to have really good connections to the clamps and large connection area.

1990 Force outboard lower drive issue question

I suppose you have the dual exhaust two piece drive shaft LU. The problem with these are that there is no shimming spec. for the LU. They were computer measured and the forward, reverse and pinion gears, prop shaft and drive shaft has a code with letters and numbers. The same for the gear...

1974 Chrysler 120 HP No Spark

What ignition system do you have? Regular auto style with points and condenser, Magna Power II system with points or with a preamp? Check your groundings for the ignition system. What is the power voltage to the CD box when you crank the engine? Need to be at minimum 9,5VDC, preferable...

    Stubborn To Start 1979 9.8

Just a "long shot", have you change the gasket between the carb and the intake manifold? I have had this kind of issue with a Mer 200 20Hp. You have to set the gasket in the right way as there is a little hole in the gasket which is for the crank case pulses to drive the fuel pump. I suppose...

    1986 Merc 60hp 3-cyl issue

Check tell tale hose first if it is clogged. Not so uncommon if it has been running in salt water and if it has been sitting unused for some years. Then check impeller, if it has been sitting unused the vanes get stiff and as they are bend in the impeller housing they got settled and not flex...

    Points for a 1975 Mercury 7.5

The 7,5 Hp Merc 75 was introduced in 1969 and it had the Thunderbolt phase maker ignition system. It uses points in that system. In 1974 and up the 7,5Hp (Merc 75) and also the 9,8Hp (Merc 110) had Thunderbolt breakerless ignition system. In this case the year is not right, it might be a 1973...

1984 Merc 25 hp no spark

Disconnect kill switch wire from CDI box and check for spark. If no spark then check output voltage from the stator. It should be 180VDC DVA (with a VOM that read DVA or with a DVA adapter connected to a VOM) or more. If the reading is 180VDC or more from stator the CDI box is bad.

Nice engines, second year model 110 and with gear shift separate at the lower cowl. Pre 1962 there were model 100. 150, 200 and 250 and the gear shift was in the throttle handle. I have had a couple of those all models. Gear shift was designed with two springs, one inside the other. A bit...

    old mercury

Look for trouble at this one, old Merc.s did not have stainless steel drive shafts. Maybe the drive shaft has rusted in the crank shaft splines. If a saltwater engine most bolts and nuts are corroded. BUT check it out first and if a no saltwater engine it is rebuildable. Old Merc.s are really...

    No fire on either cylinder

Nice to hear it is up and running again. Mc Tool, the magnet strip sits all around the inner rim at the flywheel and not need to "timed" in. It is just for the stator to charge the capacitors in CD box and the battery. The "timing magnets" is in the center of the flywheel which is for the...

Shifting rod linkage getting stuck on transmission part can’t get out of forward

Turn the brass connector 1/4 of a turn so the flat side is facing towards the impeller housing and so it not hit the casting when shifting gear. The screw should go through the connector in the shift rod grove and be tight so the connector do not turn.

Is it back fire or sneezing? Generally setting for the air/fuel mixture screw is 1 1/4 turn out from seated. It should run with this setting but it can be set in a range of 1- 2,5 turn out. Most Chryslers will run desent with the screw set 1-1,5 turn out from seated.

Do you have spark at both plugs? Does the spark jump 3/8 in or more with a spark tester? Back fire sounds like the HT wires are connected to wrong plug or the flywheel key is shared.

    No fire on either cylinder

Well that is you issue. The magnetic strip is loose. Some pics will confirm if it is the issue. It is suppose to be inside the flywheel attached to the inside rim. You can try to glue it back to the flywheel. Clean the surface of the strip and the flywheel very well. Coat the surfaces with a...

1992 Mercury Force 9.9 - No Thermostat? Help please.

I am pretty sure your engine do not have any thermostat. Looking at your pic of the idle relief/tell tale hole, it is a "Force" but old Chrysler style back from the early 70.es.
