Stalled in rough water, kinda scary...

1991 Sea Ray 225 BR 7.4 carburetor, mechanical fuel pump Returning to Dana Point from Avalon (CA), pretty rough conditions, 3-4 foot seas with lots of wind waves. Boat was getting tossed around a lot, sometimes a bit violently. I didn't have a lot of gas in the tank, but enough to get back...

Look what I found in my fuel pump!

Re: Look what I found in my fuel pump! I found on another thread that there is a filter where the fuel line feeds into the carb. I'm guessing that this may have impeded the fuel flow just a bit!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the moral of the story - if you find junk in the pump, it's...

FUEL PRESSURE - where to test, how many PSI?

I'm troubleshooting (again!) the fuel system on my 1991 454 mercruiser (carbureted). Two questions: 1) Can I put the gauge before the fuel pump (convenient), or does it have to go between the fuel pump and the carburetor? 2) How many PSI should it be? Thanks!!

Look what I found in my fuel pump!

1991 Mercruiser 454, carbureted, mechanical fuel pump. This is my fuel pump, it died in January. The sandy looking stuff turned to dust when I rubbed it between my fingers. I replaced the pump and the fuel filter, but there seems to be an lack of fuel flow, had to bump up the idle to get it...

1991 454 surging, no power under load...

I have a 1991 Sea Ray, 454 carbureted. Rebuilt the whole thing including the carburetor last year. Ran great for a while, then in February it wouldn't start. I replaced the fuel pump and filter, it ran fine on the hose. Took it out today, not so good. I did replace the fuel pump with a...

Ethanol is killing my fuel pumps! Change to electric?

I have a 1991 Sea Ray with a 454 bravo, 4 barrel carburetor. I go to Lake Powell once a year where they use a lot of ethanol, I think it is E85. My first fuel pump lasted 18 years, then since the ethanol exposure I have gone through three in the last 5 years. The fuel filters look like a...

    Who needs a thermostat?

As I have benefited much from the wisdom found on this forum, here is something I am 'giving back'... About six years ago my boat was being worked on by Tom at Lake Powell Water World in Page, Arizona. He is a former race boat kind of guy, great mechanic... He looks at my boat and the first...

    Stranded in the Catalina channel!

Re: Stranded in the Catalina channel! Epilogue: Thanks to all (especially Don) for your help. Final analysis, the ignition sensor went bad, stranding me 'out there'. I caused problems in the fuel system with my troubleshooting, making this a bit more complicated. But, I learned a ton about...

    Stranded in the Catalina channel!

Re: Stranded in the Catalina channel! Progress... First thing poured some gas directly into the carb, ran for four minutes then died. I then pulled the fuel line at the carb, put a rag in the spray zone, and turned it over. No gas... Then, rigged an external fuel source (milk jug), hooked...

    Stranded in the Catalina channel!

Re: Stranded in the Catalina channel! YES!!! Thanks Don, it took three tries pouring the gas into the carb, each time it fired up and died after about four seconds. I was about to give up, then the last try it seemed to catch just a little, then it caught!!! Thanks so much for your help...

    Stranded in the Catalina channel!

Re: Stranded in the Catalina channel! Gentlemen, I appreciate your interest! Here are some pics of the distributor area, things look pretty clean. I am thinking maybe just replace the coil and the sensor thing under the rotor? What would you do?

    Stranded in the Catalina channel!

I have a 1991 Sea Ray 225br. 454 Mercruiser (carburetor, no fuel injection) with Bravo 1 drive. Took it to Avalon, ran great. On the way back, about 11 miles from Avalon, 26 from Dana Point, running around 3200 rpm, it sputters a bit. I lower the rpm, seems ok, take it back to 3200...
