Install a clear inline filter in your line, maybe even in two places. This gives you the visual, seeing the fuel tells you its at least getting that far. They are cheap, and save buckets of guessing. Also, a fuel pressure guage, at most auto parts stores take the guess work out of things.

I agree with what you write about the anti-siphon valve, but the clear inline filter is a "no-no" when it comes to safety. If you are installing it just to check and see what is going on, then fine. But any permanent installation would not be a good idea and would be a violation of coast guard regs. Just an FYI.

Epilogue: Thanks to all (especially Don) for your help. Final analysis, the ignition sensor went bad, stranding me 'out there'. I caused problems in the fuel system with my troubleshooting, making this a bit more complicated. But, I learned a ton about troubleshooting and will be much more likely to avoid being stranded!

Final issue - as I was poking around the carb, , I pulled this off .

Does anyone know what it is?

looks like you broke off one of the idle air adjustment screws (there are two on a 4 bbl)

you gotta get that out and replace it, may have to pull the carb to get to the underside to have access to the end of it to get it out

Ayuh,.... A spare fuel filter, 'n a qt. sized freezer baggy makes changin' the filter an easy, spill-free operation....

Bondo, the freezer sized baggy is a great idea.. gosh another great idea.
