    78 Johnson 115 intake manifold

To Racerone's comment. I've changed just about every part on this motor: Complete ignition system (timer base, stator, power packs, coils, etc., starting, system charging system, fuel pump, cooling system, resealed lower unit. I have put way too much money into this "50 year old motor". But, I...

    78 Johnson 115 intake manifold

Hello, I am rebuilding the carbs on my 115hp. After pulling both carbs and peeling off the gaskets, I noticed a "chip" in the intake manifold where the lower carb mates to it. See pic. Is this something that I should be concerned with? TIA, Bryan

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input and advice. I didn't end up pulling the heads. I backflushed through the thermostat hoses with the lower unit off. I should have done it over a bucket so I could see what came out. I also replaced the T- stats, relief valves, and springs. Also...

better to run on muffs or a barrel?

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

That may not have made sense. I meant : where did the chunk of salt exit the motor when you backflushed through the hose?

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

The new remote that I installed a few years ago came with a new horn. The horn works and so do the heat switches. I know 152 isn't overheating, but it's kinda hot for 90 seconds running. Although, the warmup lever was up all the way. What got my attention was the tell tale sputtering. Never had...

I also think that the problem "still lurks"

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

The impeller was stuck in the cup, but it was not missing any pieces. The key was in the keyway. Port side (the side w/stuck open thermostat) was 118F and starboard was 152F. I only ran it for maybe 90 seconds and shut it down. I pulled the thermostats, relief valves, springs, etc...

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

I pulled the Thermostats and there was something stuck in the port side t-stat, holding it open slightly. Looked like a piece of white plastic from the intake screen. I have a new one coming with the new thermostats. As to your question about the old impeller. It really didn't look too bad. Not...

Crosbyman, I just watched the video and it's the exact symptoms I'm having. Same motor, too! Thank You

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

Fresh water only. The intake screen has been bad since I've had the motor (about 5yrs). No mud Dobbers, but I have a 3ft jumper hose attached to my muffs. I suppose there could've been a "nesting bug". Before I attempt to pull the head, I'm going to pull the T-stats to check their condition...

78 Johnson 115 starboard cylinder head getting hot

Hello, getting ready for summer. Ran motor on muffs. steady stream coming from telltale. Then stream started spitting (not steady). IR thermometer showed 118F port side cylinder head and and 152F on starboard cylinder head. No change in RPM's or engine sound, although, it was idling a bit high...

I found one on ebay. I've had this boat and motor almost 5years now and this group has helped me with every problem or question I have had, and done so without all of the B.S. that has become so common on the internet. THANK YOU!

    TRIM/TILT ELECTRICAL CONVERSION

I guess I forgot an important part of this conversion. I don't have the relay setup. Can I buy one? New? used? Or, can I just buy a couple relays and wire it up myself. If anyone has any info on this, I would really appreciate it.

    TRIM/TILT ELECTRICAL CONVERSION

Chris1956, which connections should I clean? The ones in the solenoid box? Or, are there others?

    TRIM/TILT ELECTRICAL CONVERSION

The tilt trim on my boat motor (the 78) works, but it seems very slow to me. There is also a very small leak around one of the trim rods. The T/T unit on my parts motor (the 82) works well and is, somewhat, quicker. Also, the T/T on the 78 uses a, significant, amount of power. I'm not sure if...

    TRIM/TILT ELECTRICAL CONVERSION

Hello, I have a 1978 Johnson 115hp Crossflow V4. It has a power trim/tilt with the older solenoid wiring setup. I also have a 1982 Evinrude 115hp Crossflow V4 that I have been using for parts. It has a power trim/tilt with the relay wiring setup. It works much better than the one on the Johnson...

    NEED PROP ADVICE: '78 Johnson115 2stroke/ '82 Ranger 330V

In response to CYCLOPS222: the speed was measured on my Garmin because the GPS speedo that I installed stopped working. I am also skeptical about my tach because I've seen the needle "bounce" up 5k rpm and then slowly go back down. I heard no change in the engine. I rewired the entire boat. It...
