May all free thinking folk in the world today celebrate their freedom with some time for thought for those lost, who did no wrong.

May those that survived that terrible day find solace throughout the world from the thoughts and prayers of all who cherish freedom.

Thank you, the lesson is not lost.

Re: 09/11/02

Those ghastly images of pure evil on that day, brought it home how the "boundaries of the world" have been so heavily redefined in recent times.

Due to technology and ease of travel, the world has become so much smaller... and geographic location is becoming so much less significant than it ever was before.

People are grouping by ideology - rather than just geographic location.

The enemy has no country, no official location - and that just seems to work in it's favour. They are just a grouping of people - and at the end of the day, so are we. "Virtual nations".

We the "western world", are spread all around the globe. We have largely the same ideals and beliefs - democracy and freedom. We have a common interest in world security and the rights of all people to live without fear or oppression.

New Zealanders were deeply shocked and saddened at that cowardly attack on so many innocent people in the United States - which represented an attack on the whole western world. It might as well have been an attack on our own country.

One incident sticks in my mind - I remember hearing the lady next door openly weeping while tending her garden. I asked if she was ok - she said she had just seen the pictures on tv of what had just happened in New York (she had never been to the USA, nor did she directly know anyone there). I think most people felt the same way - you could see it on their faces that day.

God bless all the innocent victims and their families - and godspeed to the all the forces waging the good fight for freedom and democracy.

I lost a brother and two good friends in that act and I thought I would share this poem with everyone. Enjoy and feel free to pass it on.

Nine Eleven

As I glance out of a snow covered window
I can see all the beauty that rests in heaven
God please forgive me but I must ask:
"Mr. Terrorists what were you thinking on nine-eleven?"

Mr. Terrorists, what you did that day was wrong
As you look down upon us, you will see, your Country is
still weak and our Country is still strong!

Mr. Terrorists, you should have
just left every thing be,
God will forgive your sins but he will
not let you rest very easily

You see Mr. Terrorists, your pain has just begun
You will have to look down at earth
every day and see what you have done

You tore down our buildings and you left people to cry
But our hearts are strong and
our pride for this great nation will not die

Mr. Terrorists do you see that here on earth
you only brought us closer together
And our love for this great undivided nation
soars on eagle feathers

So you see Mr. Terrorists, we will rebuild and start anew
as we put our hearts on the mend that day you took a few

So Mr. Terrorists, when you start to feel the pain
of destruction caused on nine-eleven
Just turn around and and look into the eyes
of all the heros you took with you to heaven

Because at that moment Mr. Terrorists, your hearts will turn sad
and you will see that you took away so many moms and dads.

So to all you Terrorists that plot and ploy of destructive schemes
This is America, The Land of the Free
Where no one will ever take away our Eagle Dreams!!!

Re: 09/11/02

I want to express similar thoughts, wishes, hopes, and prayers as those already listed, but I am not sure exactly how. In my anger, I think of Admiral Yamamoto's statement: "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve". In my sadness, I think of the Vietnam War Memorial, and not only those already gone, but also others that will perish in retribution and defense.

And then, I know what the future will become, both near-term and long-term. That very wise man M.Y. refers to also says, "And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places; all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs."

I saw the following article in our local newspaper - and expect similar tributes will be happening all around the world tomorrow.

9/10/02

Auckland will tomorrow raise a flag on the city's harbour bridge to mark one year since two hijacked airliners crashed into New York's World Trade Centre, killing 2800 people.

Mayor John Banks and US consulate general principal officer Doug Berry will raise the New Zealand and US flags at sunrise, as a Royal New Zealand Navy band plays Taps, the Auckland City Council said.

The flags will be flown at half-mast and lowered at sunset.

ACFFAACzaGck.JPG

9/11/02

As the sun rose over the Waitemata Harbour around 6.30am today, huge flags of the United States and New Zealand were raised over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and then lowered to half-mast in commemoration of the terrorist attacks on the United States one year ago.

Those taking part in the ceremony included Auckland mayor John Banks, and United States Consulate General principal officer Doug Berry.

"It was a very humbling experience and very emotional on top of the harbour bridge this morning, a poignant moment," Mr Banks said afterwards.

"We were on top of the very top spans of the bridge, and I made the comment, 'I want the world to know that we here in the Southwest Pacific care, and I want the North American people to know that we honour their grief'."

It was a sad, but wonderful sight to see the Stars and Stripes at half-mast on the bridge, he said.

"Today's commemoration was a tribute to the American spirit."

"It was a beautiful, beautiful, perfectly still, clear day, looking out over the Waitemata Harbour which was a millpond and on to Auckland city which looked absolutely serene," Mr Banks said.

The floor of the New Zealand Stock Exchange was silent this morning as it delayed opening for two hours as a mark of respect.

Hundreds of finance workers were among those killed at work when two planes struck New York's World Trade Centre.

While the market was quiet other voices rose in song to mark the occasion.

At 8.46am -- the time of the attacks in New York -- New Zealand choirs opened a round-the-world 24-hour chorus of Mozart's Requiem to mark the anniversary.

The Orpheus Choir in Wellington and the Orlando Singers of Auckland performed the 45-minute requiem.

At the same time, the 51 American scientific and support staff at the South Pole's Scott-Amundsen Base joined the global effort involving an estimated 15,000 volunteers and musicians in 20 different time zones and 25 countries.

Throughout the day New Zealand emergency services vehicles are driving with their headlights on and police station flags are flying at half-mast.

At 12.30pm the nations's official remembrance service will be held at Wellington's St Pauls's Cathedral. Prime Minister Helen Clark, Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright and United States ambassador Charles Swindells will attend.

Before the service, Miss Clark and Mr Swindells were to plant two trees at the United States embassy. The trees -- New Zealand and American natives -- are a symbol of recovery as well as representing the two fallen towers.

Memorial church services are being held throughout most South Island centres today including Dunedin and Christchurch.

Mayor Garry Moore was speaking at a service in Christchurch Cathedral this morning.

Canterbury firefighters were attending the service and at noon they will stage their own silent parade in front of the Christchurch central fire station at noon.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=2746952&thesection=news&the subsection=general

Let's not forget today that peoples from 78 other countries were killed in the WTC disaster along with our fellow Americans.

I hope that our government and the governments of those countries that support us keep their resolve and weaken the threat of terrorism around the world so that all can live in peace and harmony for the short time we have here on earth.

God Bless the US of A, and those who passed this world today a year ago from our planes & bldgs.

We just had a moment of silence in rememberance here.

On the radio, it was said that 436 babies were born on this day last year, in the state of Georgia... one good thing from that day.

Time heals all wounds, look at what happened in Pearl Harbor. Now the Japanese are our friends. True, it took a war to resolve our differences,I only hope it doesn't come to that in this case.
My sympathy goes out to the families of the victims of 9/11 :(

Many of the friends the USA has, had to be taken to the wood shed first. Look at England! Way too many allies of America are allies because they fear you, , need your protection, or they need your money. Whatever the case, STILL makes them dependant on the friendship, so all will be fine. God bless America, and all they stand for! :)

Re: 09/11/02

I don't know how the media coverage of today's solumn ceremonies went overseas, but here in the United States, all went as one would expect...That is, until the ending. Then, the talking heads tried to place political spin and revisionism into the subject..As of the 6PM news the buzzards were still at it!
I am outraged to the limit of my ability to idly watch that garbage.
Instead,I chose to say another prayer for guidance amoung our armed forces,President, and everyone else, that they are allowed to do thier job. I hope nobody stayed home, and cowered on the couch watching Tom "Broke-all".Everyone I know ,even the ones who abuse sick time at werk, were there today. The break room was a busy place, with the ceremony being shown on the TV.
Others went about thier duties, and would listen in on the car radio when able.
I did catch a different picture of the feelings of foriegn countries' populus in spite of the less-than-rosey picture thier media is painting. It's much like those of our friends here on iboats from other countries...Thank God!

The future is a "coin toss" of many diferent variables, and to have those in the media and government use this day as a strategic derrailer, makes me ill. It really does. There is no need for that behaviour, and it is transparent in today's public eye...Or at least it is to many people here, and on other web forums I've been to lately.

People seem to be saying, "No, Tom, we will never turn the other cheek! We will never use those lives to further any cause. We will fix this threat by removing it from the face of the globe wherever we find it".

If this is the case, let the talking heads speak thier peace, then go about our buisness as if they were PLYWOOD.

Amen, 12 footer...I am saddened by the loss suffered in New York and D.C. on 9/11....angered and shamed by the grandstanding of the media [and fair weather patriots]since then...I need no ones help to remember the price that needs to be paid...Today, a 'special' section in my local paper to commemorate this tragedy....as I thumbed through it eating my dinner, a picture stopped me....a rather large bomb, sitting on an air strip, waitng to be loaded under the wings of one of our servicemen's planes, that someone chalked on the nose "I LOVE NEW YORK"....I hope it found its mark....
