ok this things driving me nuts i bought it last year still dont have it working right i put in local shop they had it 2 months and didnt fix it so i thought i would take it on my own.the guy i bought from said all it needed was a stator turned out it needed stator triger and switch box,so i replaced them all compresion test was 120 on all cylenders awsome i gues anyways i also replaced the water pump whole thing .. almost new motor now huh....lol so i used the guide to set timing in the forums ..got it to what i think its correct .... got distrubter pully set where i think it correct not positive thats where i need help .... i shot with timing light looks like its running idle at 10 btdcif i rotate distubter back to reduce idle it gets to 2-4 but idel poorly and steam come out peehole afet runing about 5or 6 minuts leading to make me think timingsing off causing it to over heat .... is that possible? i took it to the lake it ran at wot about 6 mph not good but found the number 3 carb had no fuel in it the needle valve asembly was bent so it wouldnt let any fuel in ... fixed that today havent tested it yet but still steam .... any ideas would be greatly aappresated ........... o yea its merc

Are you sure the distributor is put together correctly and economizer pin/spring is in correct position???? That could explain the low rpm and when it steams is this on earmuffs or in the water????

When it steams, take your hand and feel the side exhaust plate as it should be cool to the touch, if its hot you have a cooling problem..

Steam is definately not good. You used the white plastic water tube extension to help you get the copper water tube into the waterpump outlet right? Your waterpump has the stainless steel wearplate with a new gasket on each side right? The impeller had the drive key installed right?

Idle timing specs may be off. The idle timing should be 4-6*BTDC when the carbs are just about to start opening. Max spark advance is 21* BTDC.

OK, drop the gearcase and put a hose on the water tube. Apply a little water pressure (the inlines have no more than 5PSI) and see if you get flow. If the hose just pops off and you get no flow, maybe something is clogged. Splines on crank and driveshaft are good? Driveshaft is turning?

Well if all else fails, blame it on the waterpump base warping. It does happen. Buy a whole new pump base and cover and reassemble....

The water intake holes are clean as is the water passage under the waterpump? My Mercruiser would get that area full of barnacles and the motor would overheat....
