115 Mercury Tower of Power battery reversal

I have unmarked battery cables on my c.1986 mercury 115 hp. I accidently hooked the cables up wrong and tried to start the motor. I did not realize that the cables were hooked up wrong and thought that the "clutch" that engages the starter gear was stuck. So after trying it a few more times I unhooked the cables oiled the top of the starter motor shaft and hooked them up again the wrong way. Finally realizing the problem I tried it the other way and the motor turned right over. During this entire time there was no smoke, sizzling, popping, or anything else that signaled anything wrong with the set-up, except the starter motor wouldn't engage (Because it was spinning the wrong way). What should I check for? Is the CDI box ruined? What else might be destroyed from my ignorance?

are you saying motor crankes over but will not run??

Right the engine cranks over, but doesn't start. It is on a project boat that I bought in January, I don't know if the engine would have started if I didn't do that. I just need to know what to look for to fix so it will run. I haven't tested for spark yet because its been raining. I am only 15 and can not put lots of money into engine parts that aren't the problem. Mainly because I don't have it. That is why I came here because I need to know what to look for right now all I have to check for is the rectifier. I couldn't tell you if anything is wrong because of what I did, or it came that way. I do however know that the engine was running around 5 years ago and was put away as a running motor.

I just did the same thing the other night when it was dark. I put the cables on backwards but I diddn't start the motor. I put them back on the right way but now the motor won't start, it just cranks. What could have happened? It has always started right up. the fuel is fine,Very frustrating

BTW, don't know if it's related, but voltage needle on dash is not working.

I still am not sure what's wrong I think I'll have a mechanic look at it.
