so while waiting for my carb rebuild kits to get here i decided to drain the lower unit ... i did and it was NASTY so i decided to remove it to do a flush with some diesel fuel.... here what i found when i pulled it off ...

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c004.jpg

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c005.jpg ..... broke out bolt passage for some reason ??? its ok up in the mid leg though and will still get tight

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c012.jpg .... lots of dirt

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c009.jpg ... also found one of my vernatherm valves under the wasp nest in a previous pic... guess ill be tearing down the thermo housings to check these out ... ugggghhhh

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c016.jpg .... water pump housing

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c013.jpg .... impeller which is stuck to shaft ... what the trick to removing a stuck impeller ??

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c014.jpg ... another impeller pic

http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/?action=view&current=135c018.jpg .... so i figured while im into it i might aswell take the cover off that the shift rod goes into just to have a look .... well ... of course all 4 bolts snapped off and the cover ( part# 385544 ) is no longer available according to marine engine.com in case i break it. theres a bunch of that white corrosion down in the bolt holes where they snapped off .... should i still be able to pry the cover off then try and get the bolts out ?? or do i have to drill them out now ??

also .... is there a way to back flush the engine to make sure the water jackets arent clogged up ??

if i move the shift rod up or down i should be able to get it in gear right ?? how much force should it take to move the rod up or down ??

anything else i should be looking for ???

thanks guys, scott

drive a couple of screwdrivers under the collar of the impeller. if that crap was in your gearcase for a long time, you will probably be hunting a good used gear case soon. or you could rebuild that one, but the parts are pricey. maybe take that one apart and clean the gears up some and it may last a while.

all that dirt was on top of the lower unit when i dropped it of the midleg ... NOT in the gear case itself ..... the drained oil didnt look to bad .... just dark and stinky.

you may be ok then..maybe have it pressure tested and new seals if it needs it.

you can, do not over pressure it though as you will blow your seals. I think around 15 PSI is what is used. outboard shop should sell the hand pump/gauge.

It probably would be cheaper to take the l/u to a shop and have them pressure and vacuum check it rather than buying a tester.
