Re: 14' Larivee restore

Thanks, boys. I thought you'd like. Trust me, it's not like it's "perfect" as I rolled both the white(last wk) & the gray(yesterday). I have tried to take pic of the not so perfect spots but hard to see. Definitely some orange peel, but as before mentioned...I'm ok with that. Sam...last wk, when I did the white, I should have pre-gelled some of the raw areas. Had I done that, I probably could have got by with 4 coats(2 without wax-2 with wax), but because I had so much raw glass on the keel that I had repaired, & because I wanted to take my time with thin coats to try to minimize the peel, I think I ended up with about 6 or 7 coats on the white. I thinned with styrene at first about 12%, then in later coats, about 8%. Yesterday, I pre-gelled the few raw areas I had with one thinned coat, let it tack, then did 2 coats unwaxed-2 coats waxed, thinned at about 8%. Coverage was good. Glad it's over. On to the next step. Think we'll flip back over, build small casting deck next. Need that done so I can gel up front. Once that's done, I can fit that cap &, I think, install permanently.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Took advantage of the stellar weather here in South Florida today. I worked all day on the cap, fitting, grinding, filling, sanding, glassing, blah, blah, blah. At the end of the day, I am getting close to having it ready to go on. Unlike Gus, who has something to show for his day of work, I have nuttin'...not even a blurry pic! It's amazing how time consuming the small stuff is...they say don't sweat it, but it was in the 80's today...I was sweatin' it! Couple days ago I did some mock cutting, fitting of the casting deck up front. Again...epic failure on getting pics. Haven't cut the final piece yet, so there's still time. Just wanted to keep ya updated. Still working on things. Oh...almost forgot, got a few fellas over here first of the wk..flipped her back over...hey...I just remembered...I think I have a pic of that . Have a good rest of the wknd!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Happy mid-weekend!! Another Saturday workin' on the boat. Another perfect day for workin' on the boat. Sunny, 58 this morning. Got up to about 78 by mid-afternoon. I sure hope you northern friends get a break from the weather real soon. Anyway, short day for me today. Had to do some work on the golf cart this morning. Replaced the solenoid as it pooped last night on a ride. Just put new batteries in & knew it would go soon. Had to cook a surprise b-day dinner for my daughter this afternoon, so only had about 3 hrs on the boat. After farting around trying to fit this piece of deck all week, 1/2 hr. here, 1/2 hr there(work been a booger), I finally bit the bullet & tabbed it in. I put a layer of 1708 on the underside after soaking with resin, then csm over that. Did this a couple days ago. Trimmed it down, sanded a bit, & gelcoat the majority of the backside, leaving room for a tab underneath. PB in, wet layups of 2 tabs 1708. Good for now. Work long hours this wk, but time change will help. Enjoy Sunday!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

I know somebody will catch in that first pic the tabbing toward the bow. Yes, I did smaller tab(about 5") first, then about an 8"or 9" over. Because of the curve, I had to do 2 pieces each side, each tab. The bow 2nd layer I will do after work tomorrow; kind of a square-ish piece that will go side to side. It will overlap that first piece nicely. That curvature was just too harsh to try to get it all in one piece, all the way up, without cutting or 2 pieces. I chose the latter.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Sure am, Sam (I am)! Did a similar design on the son's restore couple years ago. His has a little door on hinges at the bulkhead. I am not too crazy about his. It is much bigger than this will be, but I don't like it being.....well, so waterproof. Granted, this will be some "dry" storage for me, probably life jackets, maybe battery, but I think I will leave it with a pass through opening, no door. I like the air circulation, you know? Busy week but I'm hoping I can get the bulkhead done before the wknd. Think we're heading in your direction to visit my dad(just had surgery) & catch a couple spring training games(Detroit) in Lakeland. One of the boys who played at our local little league back when I coached/umpired is training there from Detroit minors. His name is Devon Travis & he's a great kid. We have been fan of his since our league, FSU, & now the bigs, albeit, minors. You are much further north, aren't you Sam? I will be in Tavares. It's almost Monday...enjoy what's left of the wknd! P.S.- glad to hear your buddy is progressing, even if ever so mildly.

Good idea on the open storage . Should help keep stuff from mildewing ..
Yeah I,m up on the north side of j-ville . I remember those days of little league umping /coaching . I guess I will have to wait till I get some grand kids before I'm asked to do that again .. :joyous:
Thanks for your concern with my friend . I pray he is able to regain his movement . Should get an update on him tomorrow .
Me and chris did put the boat in today ! Only caught a couple a whiting . But the weather was incredible, very little wind . Nice day just to be out cruising around !

Re: 14' Larivee restore

We have had a couple days of pretty good swell here. I know my buddy did some surfing up at Sebastian & our inlet looked a bit dicey at times. Couple of young surfers got pounded into the north jetty...all cut up like hamburger. I cut out the template for the bulkhead tonight with the extra hour of daylight. What's your thoughts on the bulkhead? It is/will be only about 11" tall. As I said, with my son's it was bigger & we gave it a door. Just cut out an upside down "U" shape & made it a door. The bulkhead(main part) is all one piece, except for the door attached with SS hinges. I was going to do the same minus the door/hinges, but as I cut the template, I was wondering if I should just do 2 bulkheads? So the width of the back end of the casting deck is about 45". So let's say I wanted a 15" opening. What if I did a 15" bulkhead on each side, leaving 15" in the middle, the height of the deck(about 11") for the opening? Is there any value to having it all one piece, all the way across? I just thought this would leave me more of an access/opening. What do you think?

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Having the bulkhead bridge over the top of the opening is a good idea, IMO. Or at least a 1.5" tall cleat double thick across the opening to prevent the casting deck from sagging over time.

If you want to use up scrap cut:
2@ 11X15 (either side)
1@ 1.5X 15
1@ 1.5X45 (runs all the way from side to side BEHIND the 11X15 pieces and leaves a gap between them for the 1.5X15 piece in the middle)

Makes the narrow 1.5X15 piece double thick across the opening below and ties it all together

That's sort of what I was thinking jb...thanks for joining in. I like the cleat idea, but I like the double cleat idea better. Here is a pic of my son's....
Certainly, if I had tons of room, I would do the same minus the door. But I'm leaning toward something like this.. . Of course the "white" paper would go to the deck & be tabbed in. I also like the extra support via the cleats as I am not as petite as I once was. (who am I kidding-I was never petite!).

Looking great, Lisa...
Just a thought...I tend to be full of them...
Instead of a bulkhead, why not a single or double upright, just to support the central part of the platform and leave almost the entire space underneath, open for storage access...you could add a small ledge/stop, along the deck to keep stuff from sliding back...
Have an awesome week!:D

Re: 14' Larivee restore

GT's got a great idea, but it won't keep what you put in there as dry from weather as having it enclosed somewhat.....

You could certainly make the center opening larger the 15" (but a third, a third, a third IS the golden ratio in woodworking :watermelon:)

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Thanks, Gus...I was going to put a slight ledge there to keep that which has been placed under the deck, under the deck. I never thought about not putting a bulkhead of some sort there. True, it would give more access to such a small space. Want it open & breathable, but not sure if I want it that breathable. See this is what erks me about this forum; you ask for advice & the next day, you have all these ideas that are just so confusing! (just kiddin'). This is exactly what I DO like about this forum...just a different set or three of eyes to give a different perspective. Don't bother me later...I have to stare at my deck, put my chin(s) in my hand, & go, "hmmmm?" Let you know when I finger it out, fellas.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Need some quick advice from my boys. Up visiting the grandparents near lots of lakes. As you know, looking for another engine, tiller for this restore. Last one we got still not back together. Anyways, found this 25hp merc nearby today. Guy wants $500. Went & looked just now. Broken skeg. More disturbing...PO said he put it in storage about 6 months ago. Didn't drain fuel so carb is prob gummed up and/or fuel pump needs diaphragm/rebuild kit. Super clean but would like some input. Don't want another lemon but not an ounce of corrosion on it. Pics to follow.

Serial #5787366. Not sure the year. Appreciate your advice. Posted also on merc forum, but I don't know them like I know you guys. Heading back for home early a.m. so have to make quick decision.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Tough call...
Busted skeg no problemo...can get a repair skeg on there in no time...
Gummed up carb...maybe be able to get it running enough to UN-gum it...
Check lower unit oil...nice/clean OK...milky, run away...
Recommend lowest possible cash outlay considering risk...
If possible, compression check at the very least to verify integrity...
My best uneducated guesses...
Good Luck...
