Re: 14' Larivee restore

I got one word fer ya'll.....and I'm so gosh-darn tired, I'm gonna abbreviate it, go to bed, go to work tomorrow, & catch up with the details tomorrow night...ready?.............................GEL!!!!!
Based on that post's comments prior to GEL, perhaps:
Getting
Extremely
Lightheaded

Have a good day @work

See if ya can box up some 'nice' weather & send it this way. I don't care if some of the contents are lost in transit as long as a good health amount makes it this far.. Sorry Boston, the box stops here.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Work done...4 hr. nap done....so I'll give ya what I know before crawling back to slumberlandville(I'm really tired!). I can't believe it took me about a month just to get this bottom/keel ready, but my bleeding fingertips & buying stock in sandpaper paid off. I can honestly say only 2 spots(small...maybe 3mm-5mm) didn't get fared out completely. Otherwise, all the "prep" paid off. So, despite hoping to try my hand at spraying, I wimped out(hah...wimped....don't feel like it today) & rolled to bottom. I let my son talk me out of spraying for a couple reasons: a)he rolled his & has yet to "finish" out his orange peel & the fish don't seem to mind & b)I figured this, I knew how to do. Just tired of sanding & didn't want to mess with any mistakes from inexperience or curing in the gun. That being said...I am extremely happy with how it turned out. I started yesterday with finishing a couple touch-ups, getting the boat out from the back patio, around front for a bath, then next door to an unused/vacant garage that I happen to have keys to.(insert-free paint room here). Weather was...sorry jb....perfect for temps but high winds so very grateful I had the vacant garage. Probably around 72 degrees after starting the day at 65. Got her in the garage around 1:30pm & started the process. My son, when gelcoating our last rebuild, used acetone to thin. I decided to try Styrene this time, just because. I thinned it out at about 10%-11%(I was told I could go up to 15%). Pretty thin, but was experimenting, since it was only what the fish would see, trying to minimize orange peel as I would not be sanding/finishing later. Very pleased. Those damn lapstrakes/ribs are a pain in the rear!!! So hard to get good coverage. I applied pretty near continuously for 5 or 6 thin coats, no wax. Only let it tack or so, then re-start. Coverage really stunk, especially on raw glass areas, I'm sure because of thinning. But I was patient & kept going. Toward the final coat(s), I reduced the styrene & final 2 coats back to back, with wax, less thin, covered fine. I took a few pics when I got home today but some shadows were on it & they offered nothing to curious minds afar. I will try again to show the finished bottom. Sooooo...my next goal(after more sleep & hunting down the first-born of whomever ran over me yesterday) is to finish prepping the sides. I have a couple days off this week so cautiously optimistic that I can make quick work of this as there is no raw glass or keels to impede my progress. If so, I hope to gel the gray next Saturday. I hope it is quicker than yesterday's 11 hr. marathon. Sam...glad you like the name...I will consider your suggestion, but pretty partial to "Light or Lite". JB....if you only knew how beautiful today was. Cold(60's this morning) but not a cloud in the sky with a cool 73 all day. Chamber of commerce day for sure. I hope old man winter eases up on you guys soon. Doesn't he know there are boats to rebuild & splash? Oh, & further, although I was properly protected, that garage was purty near flammable, for sure. My son came over around 6pm & said he could smell it in our driveway next door. When he tried to enter the garage to take a quick look to give me either the thumbs up or down, the fumes chased him out real quick. But not before he said, "This looks good, mom!" Ah, offspring approval!

If I may offer a hearty congratulations on completing a major milestone, you have earned as much rest as required...
And yes, it has been chamber of commerce weather the last few days...sorry, all you frozen Iboaters...

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Thanks Gus...another nice one today, huh? Happy Prez day to us all, even if I had to work. But I'm home now & contemplating NOT working on the boat. Tomorrow, off, another day of sanding planned..but I think I need to spend some time with the youngsters...they're starting to growl at me every time I go near a piece of sandpaper! I wish we could send some of this weather to our buddies...I hope they know they would be treated like royalty if they ever want to fly south for vacay!! I'll take 'em out in the ocean & you can spoil them inshore! Let's see how long it takes them to dig out of the ice n snow & make some south florida plans!! They can stop up at Sam's for a little redfishin'. Heck, I might head up toward that way for a redfish or trout trip(if anyone is listening...uh hem...Sam)

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Congrats on getting some gell down ! :joyous: I know what you mean about sanding the strakes . After a while they all look the same and you forget where your at with it ..
COC weather up here also . The water temps have cooled a bit around here and I think the fishing may have slowed down some . Well I know they have slowed for me anyway . Last time out just a few undersized trout but then we weren't really trying . Just fiddling around a bit . I need to get back on Chris's Glassmaster and get it ready for water so we can chase em up the creeks better .
I don,t like taking the MFG up in there too far ..
Chris and my daughter Tiffany have just signed a contract on a nice little starter house so they will be moving out pretty soon . That leaves a spare room for any of our snow weary Iboat buds that want to come down and warm up ! :fish2::)

Re: 14' Larivee restore

They've been catching 30lb-40lb kings around here last week or two & I have been just too dedicated (or too foolish) to get out there. Funny you mentioned about taking the MFG "up in there too far", Sam...I think, all kidding aside, secretly, I didn't/don't want to go thru all that work with perfect, mirror-shiny gel, & therefore why I rolled it on, because I'm afraid I won't want to take it ANYWHERE! If my boat looked like yours or woody's, I would have to clean my garage out & there she'd sit. OK...maybe a little bit of reason has to be them darn strakes & sanding them. They're a nightmare!!! On a side note...my dad lives up in Tavares & he was telling me their annual antique boat show is coming up soon. You ever go? I'm not sure on the date, but one of these times I'm gonna cruise up & see it. Anyways....good to hear the youngsters are starting out on a new venture..I got 4 here I can't seem to shake loose...I think they like it here because I keep putting food on the table & toilet paper in their bathroom!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

As promised, took a little time off the boat. Day off today...up early, errands done by 10, little homeschooling for the youngest, then off on one of the boats by 1pm. Been so long I wasn't sure if I knew what to do. Pretty good day, & as you can see, all smiles for each of the fishermen/women. My autistic daughter went with us today & she caught lots of triggers, double header parrotfish, & some grunts. We were all hooked up at one point & I told her "do not lose my pole" & "lift up easy, then crank, crank, crank down....lift up easy, then crank, crank, crank down". You should've heard her repeating that while I was either landing another or baiting a hook. She did great. King, vermillions, huge porgy....lot's of smiles....good day!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

You are welcome here anytime, sir. It's in the Atlantic..right off Boynton Beach. I am about 7 minutes from the ramp, & from the ramp, about 7 minutes to fishing. I was in about 120 ft. of water that day which takes me only about 5 minutes to reach(about a mile offshore). Gulfstream is very close down here. I don't know how they do it in the Gulf or further North of me....20miles or so just to get to fishin'. Nice having everything so close. This would have been a good day even if we didn't take a pole, but it became a great day just seeing them come tight on some fish. I don't usually eat them, but that little king's fingers sure tasted good after the hot oil bath!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

I had to google the area . The farthest south I have been is Sebastian's Inlet surfing . Are going out the Boynton Inlet . Kinda cool the way the jetties hook around to the south . How is the surfing in that area ? I sooo want to plan a trip down to the keys with the Admiral . It would be really cool to stop by yours and Gus's place to say Hi ! I need to get my ducks in a row and actually go . :)

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Woohoo-it's Fri-der-day!!! Yeah, Sam..I go out Boynton Inlet, known to be one of, if not the worst, inlet on this coast. I grew up here(live now just 2 streets from where I grew up). We have lost many boats in this inlet, including 50'-60' drift boats(google Two George's fleet that sunk there in the mid-60's). My dad taught me lots about navigating this inlet. We have a rule in our house: we don't go out thru that inlet on the weekends or holidays, only during the week, & we pay very close attention to the tides as outgoing tide & a choppy on shore sea makes it a nailbiter. As far as the surfing, I have a buddy who surfs & although he can do his business here mostly in the winter, he, too, likes to head to Sebastian. Save this website: www.co.palm-beach.fl.us or just google Boynton inlet webcam. We use this for video of inlet & ocean(several views) & also for winds & tides. This will give you a birds-eye view of my home port. Anytime you guys head this way, be honored to hang, have a nice dinner & bevs at two georges(they now have restaurant on the intracoastal). Next time I head to Miami for daughter's dr. appts, I'm gonna hit Gus up too!! Planning a trip in a few wks up to see Papa with a couple of the kids. He's in Tavares. Just not far enough North for you(I don't think). Hey everybody....enjoy the first day of the weekend!!!!!!!!!!!
