1987 140 Johnson short shaft.
Steering arm is badly rusted from
salt water. To access arm, it appears
the power head has to be removed.
What other parts have to be removed.
I have a Sealoc service manual, it has
nothing on the arm, not even a good picture.
Any help or ideas appreciated.

Re: 140 Steering arm replacement

rust makes rust that makes rust, try chipping as much out as possible, wearing your safety glasses of course, those arms are pretty thick, inspect it and see if its a project you really want to get into, you will have to pull the power head, and alot more for this job to be done correctly, the lu/ will have to be dropped, algong with the adapter plate and lower pan as the upper mount is there, then the question of the nut, and bushings, the mid section will only be in your way so put it to the side as well. this is not a hour project, and corrosion will be a factor especially around the adapter plate and mounts

keep us infoed, and good luck
r

Re: 140 Steering arm replacement

ive just done mine for the same reason.
you can seperate with out removing the powerhead
or the lower unit, as long as you keep the the motor attached to an engine hoist.
-
but it is better to remove the powerhead & the lower unit.
mine was rusted so bad - i am suprised it didnt fall off.
the upper arm to mount bolts - arent too hard to remove, with the ph off you have access to the threads of arm to mount bolts to lube.(pb blaster)
the bottom ones gave me trouble, as the corrosion was so bad - the bolt heads actually twisted 1 complete revolution. it took alot of work - with a 3ft pipe for leverage.(i forgot the air comp. that day)
-
i took a 1995 225hp 25in bracket assembly & bolted it up to my 1988 midsection.
i did some parts comparison before i bought the assembly.
upper and lower mounts were the same as well as the length of the steering arm -from mount to arm point-
i have to use the fast trac T/T, but i had gotten stuck with one a while back, so no big deal.
good luck!
