ok i have a 1995 150 johnson and i have a high idle and nothing i do changes it other than activating the shift interupt switch so could a bad power pack cause it?
well all of this is on the hose but its idling at 1800 rpm all the time and have done checked the carbs and all the throttle linkages and all that stuff. i have made sure the yellow/red wire from the starter solonoid wasnt keepin power keeping it in quick start i have grounded the white/black wire for the quickstart temp sensor plus its idling at 1800 and quick start stops at 1100. i have checked the idle adjustment screws bit it dont bring it down any and actually retarded the timing but it wouldnt come down but about 200 rpm it just acts like the timing is staying high for some reason. any help with this would be very helpfull
What is the position of your warm-up lever while this is going on? Have you tried running with the throttle cable disconnected at the engine to determine what the static RPM is?
Have you verified the RPM with a second tachometer?
it dont have a throttle cable hooked up plus i can tell that it is running too high by the sound and throttle and timming is released as for as possible
im sure the carbs are closed and i know it will idle a little higher on the hose but 1800 rpm is just too high oh and this motor set for like 7 years so i cleaned the carbs but was wondering if something could have happend to the power pack while setting to cause this
Engine idle speed must be set while the boat is at normal floating level in the lake. The depth of the water will create exhaust backpressure which will lower the idle rpm's. You cannot determine anything about idle speed running the engine out of the water on a garden hose. Should be around 650 rpm in gear, normal float level in the water.
if you running on the garden hose and coldstart the motor, you have 1800 rpm on the tach and after the engine warmed up 1100, that indicates to me that is fully normal.
with the engine warmed up shut it down and restart you will see you will only run at 1800 for a few seconds.
you really got to check the idle rpm in the water.
in gear it should be around 650/750
ok read wat ive posted it idles at 1800 all the time warm or cold and ive done done every thing to get it out if quick start but no change plus quick start disengages at 1100 rpm and when i start is it revs to 3 or 4000 right off then comes down to 1800 and thats where it stays
Have you checked the ignition linkage, if its stuck advanced the throttle plates can be closed but it will idle up high.
Make sure the ignition link comes back to its stop.
try closing the throttle slowly, when the butterfly plates fully close the ignition linkage should continue moving to fully retarded position.
