I also did some measurements and got the level out to see if my height was ok with the water intake.

No LWP, then I would consider sealing off the top two inlet holes, your flirting with disaster at that height. There are some pics and comments halfway down on facebook, search .... inline 6 mercury outboard motor fans......to see for yourself from some speed guru's... the tail has to go,drag city for what your trying to do,more hardware underwater is self defeating your jackplate

With the motor that high his whaletail isnt going to be underwater once he planes. If anything it will be 6 inches out of the water. Shouldnt affect anything at that height.

So why have the stupid thing to begin with ? That boat should pop out of the hole like nobody's business and if trimmed correctly stay on a plane at low to mid range, which goes against owning a tower as WOT in my speak means Wide Open Tower and that's there sweet spot, not lugging along.

If I over prop it I will be able to get more top end. So with the hydrofoil it will help get it out of the water. Plus with a 19p prop its not the best at getting out of the water especially with four people, a cooler, and 24 gallons of fuel.

Is this where I would install a water pressure gauge? It on the starboard side of the motor probably in between the 2 and 4 cylinders not exactly sure. The farthest back nut is a plug.

I have a 16' Glastron with a 1973 1500 on it. That thing jumps out of the water in no time with 4 adults a cooler and 17 gal of gas, without a whaletail. Granted, that's with a 17 pitch prop, but that also keeps me in the rpm range. I just swap props to what my load requires. I would like a jackplate though!

Re: 150hp tower not getting enough power

Hopefully all the new mods are done by this weekend so I can get it out to see what I have now. I was running about 47 to 49. I want to be in the high 50's. I hope im not going to be disappointed.

I can hit the upper 50's with just me in the boat and 1/2 tank of gas with my 21 ss prop. You should have no problem with the jack plate and all. Remember to plug the top two water intake holes and enlarge the lower ones!

Re: 150hp tower not getting enough power

How about an update I got everything back together on Saturday night and went out Sunday. Well for ten minutes or so. Sunday morning I put the motor on the hose to double check everything first, all was good. So when I got the boat in the water I let it run for a while everything was good pressure gage showing 2 to 4 # of pressure. So I went out on the water the boat jumped out of the water with the hydrofoil never been on a boat that planed out that fast it was like a jetski. So I cruised up river about 4000 rpm nice and easy looked down at the gps 57 mph( jackplate set st same level it was without) this was 10 mph fast than before with a 19p prop and no setback. So I turned around and pushed it up to 4500 rpm. It was still running great more control of the boat then before also it felt like a new boat. I passed the boat ramp and about 500 yds past the ramp the #1 cylinder decided it had had enough or not enough fuel that is. Blown motor!!! I was able to nurse it back to the ramp get home and my thoughts were confirmed. The # 1 cylinder had aluminum up against the plug I couldn't even see in the plug hole. So I guess its time to search for a new motor. I've already put out listing on cl. If anyone has or knows of a merc 150-200 out there im in need. My plan is to buy one now and rebuild the tower this winter.

Re: 150hp tower not getting enough power

Hmmm somethings not adding up here.
If that motor is like my '86 115 and has a 2 to 1 gear ratio, then it should only get to about 50 mph with a 19 p prop turning 5750.
I am finding it hard to believe that you were going 57 mph at 4000 rpm with a 19 p prop.
57 km/h is more like it...
To get into the high 50's you need a 21 to a 23 p stainless prop turning at wot.

Re: 150hp tower not getting enough power

Although it is a moot point, A 21 P prop on that boat and motor combo will run about 30 MPH at 3000RPM, 40MPH at 4000RPM...see the pattern? If the GPS was accurate, the motor was spinning about 5700RPM, or more.
