Just bought two used twin mercury 175's, and am trying to figure out what year they are. The previous owner says they're 94's, but they look to be a bit older. Other than the transom mount identification plate (which ours don't have), is there any other way to determine what year this motor is?

If you can find and post your engine serial numbers, Someone here at iboats might be able to help you out with finding the years of the engines.

Or you could try to compare decals from the link below.

Oh, and whole cowling has been painted over :(
On the engine block, look for a serial number on a welch plug, You might find it there.

Do a search for welch plug here at iboats, The info may help you find it on your engine, as some of the guys have posted photos of their serial numbers on the plug in the past to help give you an idea.

Good luck with it.:)

Re: 175 mercury

On tha block itself there is a "build date" stamped in tha block. It will be at tha base of number two clyinder (port side) on tha block half or "back" half of tha motor close to where tha block halves split. It will be small 1/8" numbers, m/d/y. Kinda behind tha advance timing arm. Some are hard ta find/see but its there. This sometimes unknown stamp ends all discussion on its "age"................
