From ok to best:

Quality porch & floor paint
Epoxy resin
Poly resin and fiberglass
Epoxy resin and fiberglass

I did mine in epoxy resin.

That is great advice..Thanks. If I were to do epoxy resin with fiber glass, how much thickness to you think it will add to whatever I apply it to? My plan was to try to install something that was slightly thinner than what was there, to get it in without damaging the water tight integrity.

Well as soon as you start talkin' fiberglass you get out of my expertise. But seeing as you've got a 2" one now, 2 sheets of 3/4" should give you plenty of room for added thickness due to the glass.

What is the overall actual dimensions of the transom piece that you will be replacing?

Here are a couple pictues of the hull with the foam removed. You can still see some of the yellow staining from where the foam used to be. I still have to remove the carpet backing from the side walls of the vessel, but it is good to have the foam out. I purchased my marine grade plywood for the floor, and I will get the foam this week. How do I know what the boyancy value is for different types of foams? After dealing with the pour-in-place foam, I am committed to using foam sheets for the flotation. Also, I have concerns about the foam squeeking with any movement. Is this a legitamate concern? Does anyone have any advise about this and potentially how to mitigate any squeeking? Should I glue the individual pieces together or just lay them in and cover them with the flooring?

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

I wanted to give an update on my progress to date. I thought that I would have had the floor in by now, but I have had all kinds of logistical issues. First, I found that I had to replace the transom, which set me back. Now, I realized that the trailer that the boat came with was basically disintegrating out from under the boat. Lastly, I borrowed the engine hoist from my step father, and he is going to need it back for his project. So, I changed gears this passed weekend. I realized that if I was going to have to hoist the boat up, it would be best without having any extra weight in it. So, I opted to get the old trailer out from under the boat, and get the new one under it. Then, I had to get the transom and splash well back into the boat so that I could hoist the engine back on. Here are some pictures. I would not necessarily recommend this approach to switching trailers.

I love it when boats "fly" (No trailer and they are not resting on the ground)!! Nice progress! Keep it up

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

This is going to be a big weekend on the boat. Here is my prioritized list of tasks for the weekend:

Install new sending unit in the fuel tank.
Make new fuel tank hold down brackets and install.
Install fuel tank and connect hoses and electrical connections.
Cut and fit all under deck foam.
Reinstall the seat post backers.
Install marine carpet on the gunwales.
Reweld the splashwell to the transom to complete the transom replacement.
Cut and fit the new flooring
Purchase and deliver the vinyl flooring. (maybe even cut it).
Purchase the new material for the dashboard.

Here are some pictures of the wood mock-up that I built for raising the windshield on the boat. I would welcome any comments. I am having a little bit of a hard time finding a fabricator that doesn't want piles of money to make these two pieces for me. I would welcome any comments.

I would suggest Aluminum "C" channel to go under the windshield. Whoever welds the transom could weld the C channel in the corners and you can screw the C channel to the dash and then to the windshield from inside. Then trim the backside of the C with thin carpet covered plywood. That is the basic (although not exact) concept they used on my 88' Phantom. You can weld end caps or just attach carpeted end caps while your at it. Paint the new metal the same color as your boat.

If you look carefully at the pictures of my boat project thread you can see this. They used Vinyl clad plywood on the back side of the channel but carpet clad would work as well.

That was an inspired trailer switch  Looks like a nice boat and certain to become nicer. I have a minor (that I know of so far ) deck replacement ahead for me this winter along with either fixing or replacing my trailer. You gotta love Crestliners.

Thanks 88Phantom. I actually talked myself into this windshield lifting project after seeing how well your turned out. I am planning on executing the project, almost exactly the way you you call it out above. Hopefully, Sunday evening I will have some good progress on the other aspects to report. Stay tuned.

Shoveling the foam out may be a task, and you might hit something you'd rather not. Have you thought of a 3,ooo or so lb. power washer with a fan tip to cut it out? It should cut it out in squares or whatever attack you choose, but should cut through the foam never the less. You can rent them of course. Good luck with the resto.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

I put the big push on this holiday weekend to try to get all of the work done under the deck. I was on pace to get the vinyl floor installed, but mother nature had other plans. This is what I did get done.

1. Fuel tank hold-downs fabricated.
2. Fuel tank sending unit installed, grounded, and fill, vent and supply line all hooked up.
3. Live well pump and drain holes cut through the transom, and pupm and drain hooked up.
4. Live well areator supply hose and drain line installed.
5. Foam flotation installed, under the deck.
6. Seat mount backers installed.
7. Boat filled with water (about 16" deep covered all of the rivets) to check for leaks. Dry as a bone.
8. New bilge pump installed. This pump was impressive. I used it to speed up emptying the boat. It didn't just dribble water out, it almost knocked my son off of the ladder that he was standing on next to the boat.
9. Cut and installed new marine grade plywood on floor. I still need to build the front deck, but it may have to wait until winter.
10. Cut and installed marine carpet on the gunwales.

Not bad for 3 days worth of work. I have a couple of pictures but will take more once I can take the cover back off and take them. Getting the deck on was a big step for mt state of mind. It is a big bonus to be able to walk around inside the boat without balancing on the stringers.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

Hi i was just wondering on how your project was going? I also have a '84 crestliner nordic 18. I want to restore and make the boat more modern and gain storage. I already swaped out the 75 horse merc for a brand new Evinrude 130 e-tec. I would like to see the finished product. I am thinking about going with Aluminum on the floor instead of plywood thought i want to make it last forever I love the boat so much.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

I have been in Hunting mode for a while and had to put the project on hold for a couple of months. This is the first time I have checked in to the forum in a while. I am going to attach a few pictures of where I left off. I am back in the mode (plans not action yet) of getting this thing ready to fish in the spring. I would be happy to clue you in to my findings while working on the project. Here are a few pictures of the boat just before I put it in the barn for hunting season. I gave some thought to putting aluminum on the deck, but ruled it out for cost and logistical reasons. I wantede to have a vinyl floor, not carpet, and the vinyl is not forgiving with fastners that end up sticking up a little bit, which is tough to achieve. The other thing is that you have to go with 3/16" aluminum to achieve enough stiffness. Once you get to that stiffness, it is heavy and expensive. Also, when you are calculating the amount of floatation for the boat, the wood decking is positively boyant, as opposed to the negative aluminum, which drives you to adding foam to areas that you could have reserved for storage.

Later today, I am going to post a list of projects that I have upcoming, and solicite some help on them.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

Nice work so far, I really like the idea of raising the windshield a bit. I may try to reconfigure mine to allow for a taller captain since I'm 6'5":)

I glued down Nautolex marine vinyl on top of an epoxied deck, so the deck fasteners were coated with a smooth coat of resin. It worked well, and I'd recommend the same.

It leaves a seamless deck with no fasteners thru the vinyl at all. Aluminum trim pieces can be riveted down to keep the edges from peeling up.

Look forward to seeing your progress.:D

Need help with interior work.

Need help with interior work.

I have another thread where I have been restoring an 18 ft fishing boat. I plan to have a professional do the bull of the upholstery work. However, I need to cover the marine plywood that makes up my consoles and casting deck. I would like to use carpet or vinyl upholstery material....but don't know how to finishes the edges of the plywood. I would appreciate any guidance that you might have on how to cover these vertical surfaces and edges. Thanks
