Re: Need help with interior work.

I have another thread where I have been restoring an 18 ft fishing boat. I plan to have a professional do the bull of the upholstery work. However, I need to cover the marine plywood that makes up my consoles and casting deck. I would like to use carpet or vinyl upholstery material....but don't know how to finishes the edges of the plywood. I would appreciate any guidance that you might have on how to cover these vertical surfaces and edges. Thanks

I merged your threads. With over 3 million (yes 3 million!!) posts it may be difficult for people to understand what post you were referring to. ;)

Seal the edges of the plywood with allot of coats of marine varnish. Fill any visible voids with a 2 part epoxy and seal all surfaces of the wood up. Since it will be used for seating I imagine MANY stainless steel staples will be installed so the varnish is the easiest route. If you try to use epoxy and cloth ..... you may have a tough (near impossible) time installing staples.

Re: Need help with interior work.

I am moving into the final stages of getting this boat ready to go in the water for the spring fishing season. The following are pictures of the front casting deck construction. I raised it a full 18" above the main deck of the boat. I did this for a few reasons. 1. I need storage space badly on this boat. 2. I need to pick up more area for flotation foam in the bow. 3. I am putting a livewell in the boat and needed the depth to get the capacity that I wanted without taking up too much floor space. Here is the picture of the marine plywood framing under the floor. Also is a picture of the hardboard template that I made for bow. The last two pictures are of the deck and my mocked up positioning of the seat post brackets and the livewell lid. The pink foam on the floor in the first picture represents the location of the livewell. Hopefully, I will have more to show after tomorrow.

Re: Need help with interior work.

Eyes, just joined the forum because I am planning a rebuild and wanted to ask some questions. Looks like you are doing a fine job. I can't even imagine trying to do what you have done. I have a particular interest in your transom rebuild. I have a 1986 Nordic 18. The transom is mush, but the rest of the boat is in great shape (I am the original owner and it has been stored inside). I am planning a transom rebuild soon. I pulled my motors and the cap over the transom so I could "sample" the transom condition. It s bad. I plan on pulling the aluminum cap, then cutting the splash well skin which wraps up and over the top of the transom. from there, I plan on using whatever means to get the old wood mush out. I did a preliminary measurement of the transom internal dimminsions and came up with approximately 1 7/8 inch thick. What I am really unsure about is what I am going to encounter when I try to remove the bolts through the gussets (braces) which secure the transom to the rest of the "boat". I plan on backing the nuts off a bit and driving them out. Since I do not have a hull completely disassembled as yours, it will be tricky getting in there while laying on my back in a contorted position (got 4 shot lumbar disks). Then my next trick is trying to bore the holes in the exact positions to match up with the new bolt holes. I think the drilling of the bolt holes for the motor will be easier. Also of concern are the holes for the splashwell drains. I plan on using plastic drains available from various marine supply houses. I would appreciate any comments you could provide which will get me off to a good start. My initial thought was to buy another boat, but this thing is very seaworthy (but wet and rough riding). It is a great boat for fishing Lake Erie and also for Canada fishing. Anyone who has gone through this on a Crestliner of a similar vintage, please chime in. Thanks. Mark

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

eyes, I have an '88 Crestliner Phantom and other than the hull paint, it looks just like yours. I bought mine last year, from family. I've known the boat since it was a baby, and I know it's always spent its winters indoors, but its summers moored on a lake. I have the same splashwell-transom arrangement, and hadn't given the condition of the transom a 2nd thought. How did you end up replacing it? Can you think of any way to inspect its condition without removing the splashwell?
thanks,
capndan
