You got nuthin to be Shamed about.
They had a motor You wanted, You had a boat they wanted.
You traded a BOATfor a motor.
Boat= big
motor = not so big
I hope this eases Your conscience.

Good deal man.....I've been trading similar to that on my entire boat...Went and picked up my motor yesterday. I wish I had a 115 too! Mine's just a measly 65HP

Naw, I ain't been sitting on my arse. Got a few things done.
Now where was I... oh yeah, got the motor home and tried to get it out of the truck by myself...bad idea. I only got it off the tailgate and there it sat.

Only for a little bit though. I put together my lift and used it to move the motor to a spot until I am ready for it.

If you guys remember, I wanted to reduce the size of the splashwell. I did some thinking on the matter and decided what to do. First I had to finish some work on the transom. I had to finish mounting the knee brace.

And I had to install some rivets at the side gunwales.

And I had to install the screws on the sides of the transom. Nope that is not a scratch, thats the reflection of the screwdriver...I like that paint!!!
HPIM2123.jpg

So here is the splashwell after removing it.
HPIM2113.jpg
[/IMG]
I had to separate the two pieces that were attached by rivets where the brace meets the splashwell pan. I used this tool (from HF) and it works great.
HPIM2117.jpg
[/IMG]
I used it on the underside to remove the rivets.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I got the two pieces ready for modification. I had to use a section of the top braces, I'll explain that in a bit.
HPIM2118.jpg
[/IMG]
The pan area took some thinking to mark out. Notice how the measurements don't equal out. The angles of the pan change the measurements and that messed with me head.
HPIM2120.jpg
[/IMG]
HPIM2119.jpg
[/IMG]
After I was sure, I cut the pan  and was now commited.
HPIM2122.jpg
[/IMG]
I had bought a piece of .060 aluminum 64 x 28. My stupid self forgot I needed 67 1/2" long. That is why I needed to use a section of the old brace. I got it covered though.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I sat the pan in place and put a couple screws in it under the gunwales to hold it temporary.
HPIM2125.jpg
[/IMG]
HPIM2131.jpg
[/IMG]
Then I sat the top brace in position. I had cut it down to a rough size to fit the pan.
HPIM2127.jpg
[/IMG]
HPIM2128.jpg
[/IMG]
I then traced where I need to cut it. I marked out where to leave a 1" flange and bent those like the original useing 2 x 4's and vises. I put the brace back in place and riveted it all together with 3/16" rivets. Then I removed the whole thing for sanding & painting.
HPIM2132.jpg
[/IMG]
I am happy with the results. I only took out 8 3/4" of the splashwell but its amazing how much room I seem to have gained. Oh, and thanks to NB, had to do this.

Installed my bilge pump and new outlet too.

I was just getting ready to see what you were up to, well now I see!

Man, I'm sure that took some thought to get it right Dale. Working through those measurements and angles must have been tricky. I'm looking forward to seeing it mounted buddy!

Hey, those emblems look super sharp!:D:D

Add: I just got the visual of you wrestling that OB to the ground:facepalm:

(I might have tried it too:rolleyes:)

I am truly sorry about the visual Jason. Believe me it wasn't pretty. Dang, about 30 years ago I could have done it.:rolleyes:

Very nice barter for the 115hp Johnson, that was quite a deal for ya:D

I am closely watching your work on the splashwell and it looks like you have a good plan going. Thanks for taking on the challenge, others will benefit from this I'm sure.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Thanks Mike, I am really stoked about the motor. I must be doing something right.;)
The transom should only cost $40.00 plus paint & rivets. I think it's going to be the easiest way to shorten it for those guys that want to. Only thing needed is a piece of aluminum sheet 68 x 24 x .060 and have two breaks done. Hopefully this week I can sand, prime and paint then I can mount it. Then maybe..dare I say..mount the motor???

Nice job on the splashwell, it looks like it will work out great. And really nice score on the motor! I can't wait to see it on the boat.

Thanks GT & Captain Q, figured what the heck, the worst part of any job is getting started and I really didn't like the huge splashwell.

Thanks BG. Its killing me not haveing the motor mounted yet, but I guess I have waited this long, might as well try to do it right.

Nice work. As long as your outboard still have enough room to tilt up completely, you're golden.

And so it was fabricated, but not painted. So I did that today. Please do not beat me up on the paint job, it's just primer.

So I am VERY happy Gentlemen. I only gained 8 1/2" from this modification but it seems a lot more from the inside of the boat. I still need to sand, seal, and fine tune the work, but it is what I wanted.
I am thinking of seats that will slide under the splashwell and a permanant pedistal for the console seats. I will give ya'll my insane ideas soon. Take care Ya'll.
