What’s the preferred solvent for epoxy clean up ? Like while still tacky .
Doing some screw filling and some really small fillets where the keel meets the hull bottom . Going off pretty fast . Even with the ac going still over 90 deg but humidity down to 38 % .
Small batches work fast . LOL !

Did I mess up by sanding what little epoxy I have installed on sealing the joints on the transom and a few screws before removing the blush ?
You just wash it off right ? Flooding all this unsealed wood seems like not a good idea ..idk

No, just use a spray bottle to wet any areas and wipe clean before you varnish, if u even have any. Since the ac kept the humidity down, and you were kicking off fast, theres likely little if any. The slower the cure, the more chance for blush or bloom.

Sam Zool is da man for go to. I have to say I've never really encountered any. If I sits awhile I will go back with acetone.. For a big area soapy water.
Seriously though isn't EEEpppOOxxy goof proof?

Those bumps and curves if allowed to cure just need to be sanded down. After awhile you just do your best to not have them. Sometimes I will fast wipe off with acetone before cure.

Just a learning curve KC ... I did goof and dripped a few drops of epoxy on the side that’s gunna be stained and varnished .
I took a rag and some DA and took it off the best I could .. Hope it doesn’t keep the stain from taking ..
Whilst in the mood I went ahead and rolled a thin coat of epoxy over the whole area .. The veneer is really grainy .

Any thoughts on changing the bottom color ? I wonder how much it would go against it if I were to put it in a few judged shows .
The white is just kinda boring

Tough call and more to come in regards to keeping original. Were there other acceptable colors used in the past?
By the time your finished it will be SPIFFY!

Plenty of other colors just not original to this boat . But in the bilge it was painted green .
I think that paint was added later by the PO .
just got back from the paint store . I picked up a quart of epoxy primer . Looked at colors just couldn’t decide . Have the white I used on the Manatee on hand though .

Well the Admiral said she wants to paint it white like original so white it will be !
Dont argue with the one that just bought me a new bigger ac unit for the garage ! :joyous:
Cooling a thousand times better now ..
Stood out there debating my next move .. Was thinking on glassing the whole bottom with thin cloth ..
Instead I just did a few trouble spots like the hull to transom joint . The 2 places where the trailer bunks slightly damaged the bottom . I put 2 layers in that area . And the scarf joint at the bow keel connection point .
On a glassing note it seemed like I was getting little tiny air bubbles using a 1/4” nap X 6” roller .
So I tried using a bondo spreader .. That gave it a better bubble free finish ..
So I guess next step is to mix some fairing and go to town on it . As grainy as the wood is I think I should pull a good tight skim coat on the whole bottom ..

Have you tried the "bubble buster" style rollers? I haven't done a whole lot of 'glassing but in my limited experience they worked well. The boat is looking great!

Just use a chip brush with half the bristles cut off, dab at it from the center out....takes some time but bubble free...i rarely use anything but the brush except for large pieces, then a brush and spreader.

Yep Todd , I have one of the bubble rollers . Somewhere ... Never really used it much . Didn’t seem to make much difference on the bubbles . I’m sure it wasn’t the tool but the guy using it . :facepalm:
‘I have always used poly so this is my first go at epoxy . Not too much difference in the application really ..
I’ve always had good luck with just the HF 4” rollers and as Zool stated the chips brushes withe the bristles cut off a little .
I think the fact I was using a really thin like vailing cloth had something to do with the microscopic little bubbles I was getting .
The bondo spreader took em right out ..
Put a thin skim coat of fairing on yesterday . Should be cured enough to sand out now . Getting close to primer !

Sam, when I was a kid at the marina, the old guy there would thicken the epoxy just a bit to apply to the bottom of the hull. He used 6oz glass and then rolled it on with the same roller you use to paint your house. Then with a flash light he'd inspect the job and do touch ups with a fine bristled brush. I've never done it cuz he wouldn't let me touch the old wood cruisers but he made em look like glass. He could do a hull really quick...Laying on His Back on a creeper!!!

Come on Wood, we all know they didn't have epoxy back in the 20's when you were a kid! Just kidding, Sam, you might try looking at Red Barn boats on youtube, he does a lot of this type work. I think he does use a spreader. I know he also works the cloth a lot before laying it up also. I actually do that with my normal fiberglass work, especially 1708, makes the layups a lot easier.

Sorry no pics yet my son has the computer I normally use held hostage !
‘Been using the Admirals tablet ..
Put first coat of epoxy primer on this afternoon . Laid down pretty well once I got it dialed in ..
‘The little hf air gauge at the gun is a little finicky ..
Was gunna spray 2cd coat but had a spot or two I wanted to fix before second coat so got the filler on and drying now .
Cant run the ac while spraying so it gets hot and very humid really fast . I have a floor blower type fan at one door and I open the other door a bit so it does get filtered out pretty well .. Suprisingly not many bugs out lately .. I think it’s too hot for um ..
