great, thanks!

Is the impeller a hard thing to change? I know nothing about this part.

No, actually changing the impeller is a simple job. While you're at the dealor picking up your new parts, you should get the Seloc Volume I, Evinrude/Johnson Outboard repair manual. It has a lot of helpful information on doing a tear down and rebuild, as well as tune-ups.

To start off with, there is an obround plate, at the lower side of the motor leg, held on with two screws. Once you remove that, then you can access the shift rod coupler. Take out the lower bolt.

Then remove the 7/16" bolts that hold the lower unit on to the motor leg and it should separate.

You will see a round housing, held down with 4 screws, where the drive shaft goes into the lower unit and this is where your impeller is located.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Re: 1953-54 Evinrude.

Thank you all very much for all the help!

I tried getting those 2 screws off today, just experimenting...and they wont budge...i got the 7/16 bolts off, no problem. The shaft does not completely separate ofter the bolts come off, it just separates a little bit...is this normal?

Anyone have any advice in getting those screws off?

If i can get to the impeller ill definitely get it from this site...its been very helpful!

Are you talking about the 2 screws that hold the little oval shift connector cover on the midsection? If so, yes, it is normal for the l.u. not to drop very far. since your shift rod is hung in the connector. don't let it drop until you get the connector unscrewed. You might try getting a screwdriver that perfectly fits the head and also try some heat on the midsection around the screws.
It'll come right out after you disconnect the bottom screw that holds the shift shaft in the brass connector. Be careful not to lose the little impeller key that fits in the driveshaft. It's easy to lose if you don't know it's there. Once you pull out the impeller, it will either still be in the driveshaft, or it will fall out.. Also remember to put a little grease on the impeller blades before you reinstall to make them easier to get in the water pump housing. Turn the driveshaft clockwise as you fit the housing over the impeller. Make sure you get your water tube back in the grommet upon reinstallation. The shift rod is easy to get in the connector. I worry about it last.
Good luck,
JBJ

Hey guys...well i'm back on this project...i just need to replace the impeller and she should be good, i hope.

I'm having a lot of trouble loosening those 2 screws...the bolts came off easy, but the 2 big flat head screws wont budge. Any advice?

Where are you buying your parts? 60 dollars will buy four coils. It does add up though by the time you get all the misc stuff, but once you buy that you have it for the next one you are going to find to work on.

I just saw this and did a quick check here on iboats and you are right! $18 each. I got ripped off! I bought them locally and paid $28 each. Well, I guess I supported the guy who can get me stuff the day I need it so that next time he will be there when I NEED him.

A little advance planning would have saved me a ton.

Re: 1953-54 Evinrude.

I have an old 15 horse Evinrude the same age as yours. It came w/ my fishing boat. Once you get it all fixed you'll love it. My ol' girl starts first pull and runs like a fine clock. It pushes my 12' Livingston just fine. When by myself, I can move fuel tank and batt forward and get it up on a plane, which is pretty good for a tunnel hull. Sounds like you about have it ready to go. Best of luck to ya,
Mike

The head gasket needed replacement it was all corroded (remember its a 55 year old motor and by the looks of it the head gasket had never been replaced), plus the thing wouldn't turn over, so by taking it off i was able to grease up the pistons so it would turn over. (It took a lot of work, as the motor was sitting for 20 years). So as a result of all that, it starts and runs, but i can't run it, because it needs an impeller.

I'm taking it to a machine shop to get the 2 screws the heads broke off fixed tomorrow so hopefully i'll be able to get to the impeller and make sure thats my problem (im pretty sure it is).

I can't wait to get this thing running...everyone has been telling me to give up on it (its too old, its got too many problems...), but I'd really like to see it run again.
