1953? evinrude 15hp ~ tune up advice

I recently purchased an old 1953 super fastwin 15hp evinrude. I payed more than I should have but it's my first gas outboard and I was excited. I took it home fired it up in a 55 gallon drum and it runs rough to say the least. It barely has water circulating through it (I'm thinking it needs a new impeller) and smokes alot, + seems to rev up and down (I've heard that this might be because of being in a barrel).

I'm just wondering what advice you guys might have for a newbie. What parts should I be looking at replacing to tune it up, and where do I go about finding them? Should I be looking online or just go to a boat store and pick them up?

I know very little on it all, I've always had a 15' sportsman caone with 40# trolling motor and this year bought this and a 14' aluminum rowboat... Thank you for any information you might be able to give me...

PS should I be thinking about putting a fuel pump on this or is it an ok idea to use the old pressure tank (no leak and works fine...) (Serial # 15012-13051)

this website might help you

http://www.boatsportandtackle.com/servlet/the-785/CLYMER-SERVICE-MANUAL-JOHNSON/Detail

they have alot of parts for your motor too i noticed

Err....uh...this site, iboats.com, offers the same service manual, and also has parts for that outboard, from Sierra. We try to support the folks who support this forum. When this site doesn't offer parts for a particular outboard, or whatever, then links to other sites are appropriate. That's not the case here.

Thanks!

I agree that we need to support this site when possible. I would start with pulling the flywheel. If the coils have not been changed they will need it. Two new coils, points and condensers are about 75-100 dollars here. a new impeller is a must. They can run a bit odd in the barrel, but surging is probably spark or fuel. Good luck and keep us posted.

No need to abandon the pressure tank if it's in good shape. New hose is available if needed.

I'd keep the pressure tank. At least until everything else is fixed. Check the compression first, if it's bad don't put any $$$ into the engine in my opinion. Then check the spark for a good strong one, if not pull the flywheel and check the coils. CArb probably needs cleaning and it might be running rough in the barrel as it's sucking in it's own exhaust. try a fan on it to clear the smoke.
