Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

All,
In the case of this Clutch dog and Gear are they the same part regardless of Evinrude or Johnson Brand?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

All,
I think I can answer my own question...:)

It appears so as the part number 375783 Clutch Dog is same for a few years and does not change whether its Johnson or Evinrude.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

All,
I found the Clutch Dog (NOS) and Craddle (NOS) and have purchased them.

I am looking for the forward gear...Does anyone have the part number for this individually instead of the complete pinion assembly.

Thanks,
Chris

Weird, I see what you mean. I'll see if I can find a number in some of my paperwork. I believe the '56 and '55 should be the same gear.

Is there a part number stamped on the gear itself?

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

Ill look in my notes and get the exact part number for you.

Just an FYI, you can use the 50s RD gearsets 25hp, as well as the 1956 30hp, but when the RD went to 35hp in 1957 they changed.

Gives you an idea of what motors to look for. As stated above, buy a whole gearcase, it will be more economical than buying just single parts. You will need other parts from it in the future anyways. Also, if your current skeg is shot, you will need a whole gearcase anyways. The skeg/gearcase is casted as one part. When you try to swap skegs you may get leaks as the "break line" will not properly line up.

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

All,
I agree on the whole other lower unit as a parts unit......I will more then likely pick one up real soon as most of my outboards are 1950's era (25,30,35HP) outboards.

I found the Clutch Dog and Craddle to my door for around 35 bucks and these are NOS (New Old Stock). I have located a guaranteed good front gear for $25 locally. So for $80 including the new seal kit I hope to be in good shape.

I would like to know though what is available based upon part number for the Front Gear....If anything.... other then used or a pinion gear assembly.

Again thanks for the help,
Chris

HighTrim/Everyone,
As the current outboard lower unit is definetly not what came with the outboard, I did some research over the diagrams online to try and pinpoint year, I am fairly confident my gearset is either a 1955 (25Hp) or 1956 (30HP). The reason I say this is the vertical pinion gear that has direct contact to the driveshaft does not have that "extra" extension like in the '57 and '58 models. I believe the extra extensions hold additional thrust washers on those years. Mine does not have these and looks like the '55 and '56 models.

jbjennings/Anyone,
If you happen to have those part numbers for the gears seperately that would be fantastic.

Thanks for the help!

I agree, look up a few posts, the '57 and up gearsets are different. You need them from a '56 and down.

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

All,
Ran into a few issues.....Not a big deal as the parts will be usable on one of my other outboards.

First ordered the new Clutch Dog based on it being a 55 or 56 (based on part number 375783).

The part arrived today and it does not fit the pinion shaft. The shaft is slightly to large.

A few days before I received the new craddle (part # 302650) and it does not match either. My craddle has a completely enclose pocket that that the shift lever ends actually fits into (no knobs). The 56 out in our local yard has more of a open craddle with a shift lever that has knobs and the craddle sits on those. (If anyone thinks pictures of the parts will help.... I will post them please let me know.) The new craddle will actually fit in the clutch dog its the shift lever/craddle connection thats the problem. So its not matching up to a 55 or 56. With the vertical pinion shaft not being long (as discussed previously) its not a 57-on. (we do not believe).

So is this lower unit possibly prior to 55? What years could possibly fit this 1955 Big Twin 25HP (Serial 25018)?
Is there a part number on the lower unit casing we could use to match year......The mistake (this time), I did was not to verify year before buying parts....Luckily I have a 1956 30HP (Is all original ...I know original owner) which can utilize these parts.

As was mentioned previously buying another lower unit may be a good move...

Again thanks for the help,
Chris

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....

All,
Picked up a 1956 Big Twin 30HP lower unit.

Found it online should be here by end of next week.

Went after the 1956 as it will match another outboard I have year wise exactly. Also the new parts should match as well.

So I guess I am going to re-assemble the old lower unit and go with the one I bought at this point. I am plannning on resealing it so I may just swap out the clutch dog based on condition.

Will keep everyone posted,
Chris

Re: 1955 25Hp Big Twin....Success!

All,
Got some time on the fourth to work on the Big Twin.

The Lower unit I purchased online had a bad propellor shaft oil seal retainer housing (small crack which displayed O-ring). Luckily I was able to steal another from the other lower unit. I also took the new Clutch Dog I purchased earlier and installed it as well. The one on the lower unit looked very used but gears looked good. I put in new Lower Unit seals with 3M-847 and installed a new impellor.

I put everything back together and put the engine in my recently found large test tank (~200 Gallons) and ran it for about 20-25 minutes. I tested both gears and verified cooling is working as desired. Everything ran good and I checked for water in the lower unit. I did not see any except for clean oil.

I installed it on my boat which I hope to run it later this week early next.

Again thanks to everyone for the help on this endeavor.
