IF, I was ever so lucky as to stumble upon a "Tin Boat" such as this within my Travel Range...I would become a "Tinner" in an instant!!! This is such a KOOL boat. I can't wait to see how she turns out. I know she'll be a "Beaut"!!!!!:)

No, it was a little to far away and the trailer would have neeed to much work to get ready for the road. I Passed.

I have been busy at work over the last few weeks on the boat project, mostly with the trailer (update at a later date), but this weekend it was a balmy 47 degrees here in Detroit so I decided to use NAPA aluminum brightener to clean the inside and outside hull from all the years of tarnish and junk. It worked very well!

Here are 2 pics to show a before and after the Aluminum brightener:

This is the interior of the boat after the aluminum brightener:

Re: 1956 Duratech S-13R "Project: Pop Can"

Today was a fun day, we came to the conclusion that we will need to do as much work with the boat in a heated space as possible over the winter. Unfortunately, our garage is FAR from being warm, even with 2 heaters running :( so we came to the conclusion that our basement is the next best space.... we measured all the doors and came to the conclusion it WILL fit down the stairs with about 4 inches of height and 3 inches of width to spare. Unfortunately there is one thing standing in our sucess...this half wall/guard rail thing in front of the stairs.

Well, my dad said he had an idea and did NOT want to work in the cold all winter long so we got some of the tools and a half hour later....

My little brother was helping us move it down the stairs so I decided to step away and take a picture ;D

With inches to clear we got it down the stairs and to its new work area (will need to bring it up in a week or two to prime the inside for paint then bring it back down)

LMAO!!!

I thought all the people up north were used to being cold???:cold:

With those working conditions I know that boat will be rare and ready to go by spring! Thanks for keeping us updated!

Great boat! Enjoy seeing your progress so far. Wish I could find one for our little Lake up in the Adirondacks. To follow up on jigngrub's post - ya, we're used to cold up here, but I sure wish I could get my little Lake/River cruiser in my basement to work on. I love the mods luke did to his house to get pop can inside.

Very funny, anything to have a warm Pop Can.

Had to do something like that to fit a piano in the house.

Great looking Duratech.

Re: 1956 Duratech S-13R "Project: Pop Can"

I am happy everyone got as much of a laugh as we did! I was working on the boat in the basement while my dad did the work on our "side project" and here are the results: Just needs paint

I decided to take West Systems 650 G/Flex epoxy and seal all the seams.
This is a link to the process I followed I was able to do the bow, side/bottom, and transom seams and used less than 1/4 of the epoxy.

One last thing.... my dad came to me with the idea of installing a permanent fuel tank under the rear seat area with a fill cap mounted to the seat top, under the to-be cushion. I am on the fence about this due to the loss of area for flotation foam. Any input on this??

Gas floats and a sealed tank would also. I say yes if you can find a tank that fits.

You have a great wife if she's OK with you doing this. And I think you would be the first to post pictures here. My Lone Star would never make it through the door. Nice work on your restoration. I think the tank in the seat idea is awesome, nothing worse than having the exposed tanks banging around, and taking up space. Go for it!!

Well there is no wife in my life at this point (I am only 19!) and my dad (who's house this is at) said he always hated the half wall anyways, so he was more than happy to hear me out for the demo work. Next weekend we will see how much a tank will cost us.

To make the most of that space, you'll need to go custom tank. Else you may not get much capacity.

A 'stock' tank from a typical manufacturer may not conform to the interior profile of that bench seat very well.

Unless that's the direction you were headed next weekend already... In which case, carry on....

Anybody prepared to demo a portion of their house (disliked component or not) to get a project hull in their basement for the winter, can handle most of the decision making needed during a rehab....:watermelon:
