Hey folks, my names Johnny and this is my first post here. My uncle passed away 3 years ago and left his old 72' polar_kraft jon boat with a 1956 bucccaneer to my dad(the 56 buccaneer's were the same as the 56 evinrudes and johnsons). Well my dad never moved it from the spot he parked it in his yard and so he passed it on to me a couple months ago to resurrect. I put lots of hours into the boat and trailer getting them right and have of lately been trying to figure out the OBM. Uncle told me when I visited him in hospice that he just had the lower end gone through and any repairs made that were needed and that it ran good. well I have taken her out twice and she just doesn't run right. I poped the top and it has new coils, cond's, points. I did have to re-set the points to .20, they were a little closer. the coils looked like they were in there straight but (question)- do they need to be positioned some how for proper timing?
-also- what is the proper fuel ratio when using 2 cycle oil? the old specs say 24:1 when using sae 30 weight
---I think I need to clean the carburator most likely, it runs pretty good in neutral but spits and bogs and knocks in gear.
I have no experience with OBM besides what I have been reading lately on the internet so I hope I am on the right track but I just wanted to pick the brains of some folks with more experience- thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forum:) The coils have to line up flush with the mounting bosses. I'd check spark with a spark tester and see if you have a good blue 1/4 inch spark. If so, the coils are probably mounted correctly. I'd also check compression before sinking a lot of money in her. If compression is ok, then go ahead and clean/rebuild the carb, install a new water pump impeller, and change the oil in the lower unit. If the oil is milky, you may need to replace some seals. 24:1 gas:eek:il should be ok. That's a quart in 6 gallons. Use TCW-3 oil.

The coil's laminated cores ends should be flush with the machined edges of the posts they sit on.

24:1 is the correct oil mix. Don't be tempted to cheat, the motor is NOT the same as J/E. It has silver plated aluminum connecting rods, not needle bearings. Not to worry, the aluminum rods are good, but they won't tolerate any water intrusion. I suggest you replace the lower main bearing oil seal to prevent that water intrusion. But you probably won't do it. Oh well,

Thanks for the info guys. I did make sure that the coils were lined up flush with the mounting base edges. I also believe that the seal and connecting rod were already replaced. I need to double check the paper work unc left, he circled each part/seal that was replaced when he had it in the shop and I am pretty sure I remember those parts circled. I pulled the manual starter back off yesterday and saw where it was scrapeing the top of the stator so that was probably the noise I heard. I wll check the spark and compression next once I get the proper testers to do that.

Just an FYI. Some auto parts stores like O'Reillys and Autozone will loan you a compression tester for free. The spark tester is only like $7.
