Your points should be #580148 and your condensers # 580321.
These are omc numbers.

Re: 1956 ? Johnson Javelin 30HP ?

Rolmops, the condenser number you gave is the same as on the old ones. Problem is, I don't know how that number relates to the Redline Kit that he gave me. New condensers would have to come off again to see if there is a number on them. If there is, then it's on the end opposite the wire end and that's mounted down and can't be seen without taking it off. :(

Is it possible for anyone to cross the OEM Kit number that's on the bag to the RedLine number to be sure I have the right kit?

The old points have a "M" inside a circle and a small "DD" on them, but no number. I'm at a loss other than waiting until Monday I guess and go back again. :( I even had all the old parts with me, but he said he had the right kit, so he never even looked or compared them. Guess I know better next time when the old ones are with me. I'll just look and compare them myself. It's a loooonnnngggg trip there and back.

Are Redline parts not well known? Is it advisable to stick with OMC parts? How about Sierra?

Thanks a bunch!

Hello Suzie.
Sorry I have no means to cross reference.
The points you are looking for are the type that all OMC 2 cylinder engines up to 40 horse used from 1956 until 1972.They should be very easy to get.
If you go on e-bay into search and go by seller, type in the name "obman1" and go into the list he currently is auctioning, you will on the bottom of page 3 find an auction called:"Johnson/evinrude tuneup set" for 55 dollars "buy it now". I buy a lot of stuff from this guy.He is trustworthy and that tuneup set has got what you need.
I never heard of redline.Maybe they are mostly down south.Sierra is fine for simple things like points, there are however plenty of horror stories about harder to get parts where Sierra is just very slightly different and therefore troublesome.(to put it so I can't get sued).
Good luck.

Re: 1956 ? Johnson Javelin 30HP ?

I'm back... and all I can say is "WHOOPEE" :D she's running! Thanks Rolmops, I called around until I located the OMC points and condensers. Cheaper in the kit (P/N 172522) and didn't have to order them, put them in and after a few tries she turned right over! Funny how that works when you have the right parts.

So, mixed the fuel 24:1 like I've read on this forum, but wonder if it isn't running rich, but better that than too lean.

Since I'm the visual person, thought I would snap a shot and post it. You can tell she's pumping plenty of water, nothing seems to be getting too hot and after running in the can for a while, shut down and she starts right back up!

Here's the URL... does this look like too much exhaust considering she has been in 'dry dock' for almost 6 years?

http://webpages.charter.net/suzieb1/JohnsonImages/MotorRunning1.htm

I'm sure I'll have a couple more questions after she goes to the lake for a bath. I have to wait for my son to come visit from Memphis so that I will have help paddling back (just in case). My other 3hp Johnson that I wanted to use for a kicker is much newer ('91) than this one and obviously not nearly as well made as the old one. I haven't been successful with that one (yet). This one has always been in fresh water and the little one was in salt water for years as my dinghy motor. Sure makes a difference too.
Thanks again for all your help!
:D
