try moving shifter with engine not running. Is it easy or is it hard? Be looking into the possibility of tearing down lower unit. Note: not as bad as it sounds. Not much to them. Post back yer results

For starters make sure your throttle is twisted all the way down while testing the shifting so that the timing armature place won't get in the way. Then check the shift rod connector (part 41 above) to see if the upper and lower shift rods are connected. If they seem ok, try gently turning the prop by hand and see if you can shift the motor into/out of gear. If not, you may need to drop the lower unit. To do so remove the lower shift rod coupler bolt completely and the 4-5 bolts that hold the LU to the exhaust housing. The LU should then drop out (it may be a little stubborn, but be patient). With the LU removed try shifting into gear using the normal shifter. If it shifts into gear(s) easily, then you know the issue is in the gear case. Try these steps and let us know what you find. Hang in there. That's a great little motor you got.

you should have felt a detent between gears. If you didnt, you have to go into it further! I am thinking the detent spring is broke or has came loose.

that model does not have a detent spring. most likely the shift lever needs adjusting. common issue on them.

I would open up the gear case too. It's really not that bad. Be sure to check the tabs on the clutch dog. Unless someone has replaced it recently, which I doubt, it's probably worn. It doesn't take much for them to go bad. Make sure the shift lever pin (phillis head screw) is properly seated too. The gears themselves are super simple, just remember you'll be looking at everything upside down. There are lots of threads that can walk you through the job. You may want to consider changing the seals while you're in there. It's not too much work, only costs about $25 and is well worth the effort. Take pics for later reference if you're worried, but it's not that bad. Keep us posted.

be VERY CAREFULL when turning the prop on any motor, for any reason. make sure the plug wires are off, or even better, remove the plugs. rotating the prop, under the right circumstances ,could (and will ..i still have ten fingers.....start your engine)

is the float set level? did you put the tiny wire clip on that connects the new float to the float needle? (only ask because i just did a 1962 rude, that had no clip, and no spot on the old needle for one to attach!)
....what nhl team do you cheer? lol

Hi hockeyfann. You can get a carb float right here at iboats. Here: http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Carbu...9654512--**********.845325980--view_id.271386

As for the screws. Try a bit of PB Blaster, if that doesn't work, then you may need to try a bit of heat to loosen the screws. Take your time so you don't snap off the heads of the screws. Patience is a virtue and will be richly rewarded. Good luck!

Impact driver. I've used them many times on those units. However, they should not be corroded - they should be stainless. If the screws are not stainless, then someone has mucked around in there before...
