Oh yeah - and it's pretty bad by the sound of it. I hope the gears are okay.

OK, sooooooo Drained the WATER from the lower unit (No Oil), then put motor upside down and removed Dog and inverted it and oiled it up. HAPPY ... WORKED GREAT!!! But there ALWAYS is a sad part... My danm trailers wheel flew right past me and I carved out the asphalt on the road for a while. Tax dollars I guess. Anyway, a nice neighbor retrieved the wheel and I barely got home...

If you're not doing the seals for a bit, keep an eye on your lower unit oil. Crack the bottom screw after every run and check for milky oil. If it's vanilla shake, drain and refill it...

I did a run and the oil looks not milky (whitish) but rather yellowish...

I'd run it for about a week and then check it. One run won't tell you much unless the seals are absolutely shot.

Update... So, I eventually removed and replaced with new clutch dog, seals, etc.. Took out for a spin the other day at WOT and then died pretty instantly. Could not get back up and running BUT noticed it was steaming at the exhaust housing. I ran a barrel test the day before to make sure impeller was working and cooling engine before this incident. It turns over and idles for seconds before dying out or it just cranks, cranks and cranks with no idle. Spark plugs sparking, fully charged battery. Tried every carb adjustment etc, opened carb for clog found nothing wrong. I think it overheated and now I need to know what to check before throwing in the garbage :(

Remove spark plugs, inspect plugs for water traces.... Do a compression test... Drop the lower unit and double check the water pump assy... Let us know what you find.

If you're in the states, your local friendly Autozone will let you borrow one for free as long as you have a credit card to put in a deposit that they will refund you when it's returned.
