The bushing in the magneto plate was loose.-----Shims used to tighten it up.-----I am not there to see / inspect the parts.

Up and down or side to side (radially)? I'm going to put it back together tomorrow with the new coils and with out the shims and see what it does spark wise and how it feels slop wise. Old and new coils Ohm check good on all 3 checks.

Annnnnd my barrel is frozen on the top. Might get a warmish 30+ day Saturday so I can test her out with new gas and coils.

This is a retaining ring from an 18 -- upside down in the picture. The underside of the pictured ring is flat with a larger circumference, and is on top when properly installed (Note the notch -- visible in your pic, and should not be.)

Your local farm supply store might have a floating heating element ( animal water trough ) and that might help with an outdoor , outboard test tank.

I would say there is nothing wrong with this 60 year old part.------Looks exactly the same as the day it was made.

Those 1957 model 7.5 HP motors in good condition idle / sound so nice that will be reluctant to shut it off.----A party from 2 hrs away gave me one of those powerheads after I repaired his 1989 model Johnson 40 HP ignition.

Part looks fine. Reinstall flat side up. Will cure the wobble, and likely the operating issues.

I've prepacked the coils with brand new ones and I'm bolting it all back together. I see the gasket that goes under the power head close off one hole. That hole leads to the water discharge. Is this correct? Pics to follow.

The above picture; the small screwdriver indicates the hole that is covered up.
Next pic shows the gasket sealing this hole off.

Vintage Outboard is where I got the gasket kit.
Just looked on Marineengine and picture of the gasket shows it blocked off same as mine. Only got one gasket with the kit, and it does match the old one too. Last time I ran the motor there was so much white smoke I couldn't see in the barrel to check water flow from the engine. I wondered if it was steam. Dunno.

I mixed up new gas/oil at 16:1. The barrel outside is nearly free from ice. I'll run it in the morning. New coils and checked to make sure the water tube was hooked up correctly. I'm ready. Maybe I'll video it.

When I can not " see " I put my hand at the exhaust relief to feel for the water.

OK I ran it in a barrel and same thing. Hard to start and does not want to idle down. Tons of smoke and a bunch of oil in the barrel. Now it's surging too. Tons of slop in the magneto plate, which accounts for the wad of shims stuffed in it to try and reduce the play. I'm going to try and glue some .005 teflon to the inside of bore. If that doesn't work I'll braze it and bore it to size.

Some one converted this motor over to single line. I'll look at the pump and make sure it's sound. They also painted it. The paint literally flakes off with my fingernail. At this point I'm going to do a complete tear-down. I'll get the bore gauges from work and my mics and calipers and start at it. I really need this to run in April. It's the kicker for our 16' boat.

I took a video of it running. Can I post it here? It's not letting me.
Here is a picture of the gasket painted over. Who paints a gasket before installing it?

This was plugged off. As I was pulling the reed cover off I notices it leaking, so it's not sealed off.
