Re: 1957 Johnson - Water Pump Help Needed

Chinewalker - where'd that exploded view come from? That's not the same one that's in my parts manual (Johnson Motors Parts Catalog 1957, Models RDE-RDEL-19 and 19M, 35HP, P/N 377024). My manual has exactly zero information about tiller assembly. Weird.

I suppose there's a chance on the flywheel thing, although my guess is that the spring seat is missing. When I took the screw (123) and handle (117) off, the spring (120) came out, but nothing else came out and nothing else appeared to be up inside there. I'll have to double-check when I get home.

I've found a couple of possible replacements available online, but none of them are specifically off a 1957 35HP. There's one off a 1958 18HP that looks like it might be right, one off a 1956 15HP that also looks the same, and another guy who says he's got one that'll work but it might not be a matching color or have the right grip (waiting for pictures on that one). I'm hoping somebody can confirm that the 1958 18HP unit will work, because the outfit that has it for sale has a couple of other things I need and I like one-stop shopping.

EDIT: Funny how the prices of these parts differ. What appears to be essentially the same part (the tiller arm from the "elbow" out to the grip) is available for anywhere from $25 to $175. That's just the range on the ones I listed above.

That diagram is from a later 40hp, but the tiller handle bits are more or less the same.

The handle casting must be off a Big-Twin series (Johnrude 25 to 40hp big blocks). The tiller assembly off a 15 or 18 will NOT work. The handle grip and bits themselves will, but the handle castings are different. If you're like most of us, this won't be the only motor you'll end up with, so getting an 18 tiller just to rob the grip, spring and seat out of won't be a bad thing... ;)

Chinewalker - thanks for the info. Turns out most of the parts are available online; only thing I can't order from a vendor (so far) is the grip and the arm casting (which I don't think I need).

Can you take a look at the attached exploded view and tell me, where does the bushing (82) go? Clearly the shaft assembly goes through it, but I can't figure if it goes on the grip-end (maybe mating to the friction block (72) ) or the gear end?

The bushing goes in the base of the handle, butted up against the gear. The flange on the bushing is likely what has worn on yours, enough to allow the gear to move forward. It is kind of a hard fiber thing, if I recall correctly. They do wear out, particularly if not kept lightly greased...

Re: 1957 Johnson - Water Pump Help Needed

Okay, thanks. I just ordered nearly everything I need to re-build the assembly. I'm going to re-use the steering handle (arm casting) and the gear & shaft assembly, but everything else is getting refreshed. I may try to make do with what I have in the meantime so we can get back out on the water, but in a couple weeks I should be good as new (at least on the tiller arm).

Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't use any gasket sealant on the water pump, but you can if you like, I suppose. It's not factory spec though. As for the tiller arm, it may be cheaper/quicker easier to just bolt on a replacement. You should be able to find on on ebay/aomci.org for $20-$30, but it may be a different color. My tiller/throttle stays put once I twist it to a given position. I'm not sure if your model has it, but there may be a friction plate (plastic disc) and spring within the tiller handle that will allow you to adjust the firmness. Of course, you don't really need the tiller at all if you're ultimately going to convert to a helm with controls. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Re: 1957 Johnson - Water Pump Help Needed

I made a few adjustments to the steering arm assembly tonight. It now meshes with the gear mounted to the motor much better, but it hasn't really solved my problems (not all of them, anyway). I still don't think I'm getting full travel on the twist-grip.

Here's a link to a short video clip of the motor running at idle and at WOT:

Thoughts?
