I would look them up on eBay and see what they are selling for, eBay pretty much sets the price for everything now, also check the sellers rating

Without a harness and controls, I would not expect them to be worth much. They are 55 years old at this point.....

I find Ebay prices are frequently inflated. I have also seen people who think their outboard motor is worth $ X because they saw one like it on eBay. About a month ago I bought a 1958 Johnson 10hp. After we agreed on a price and I took the motor home he dropped the pressure tank by my house. He made the comment, "I sold that motor too cheap. I saw one on ebay that went for twice the money."

However after some inquiring it had new points and coils, lower unit re sealed, new impeller, etc. The one I bought from him needed a a new prop as the rubber was spun, and it has fuel issues.

So a person needs to be sure you are comparing apples with apples.

Good advice from Greg O. If it were me and was looking for something like it I wouldn't go higher than $50 to 75. Especially since it's missing the wiring harness and controls. Just my opinion.

I think we need more info!

Is it coming from a mechanic with all new ignition, carb clean/rebuilt, new water pump, gearcase resealed, etc... ready for water? Or simply well used and simply running? Big difference there. All done ready for water would easily bring 350 in my area, about 100 to 150 needing tune up.

Also, if you're buying a running motor.. HEAR IT RUN!! I've fixed MANY customer motors that were un-startable 'runners'.. and the sellers just said 'all sales final'.. or 'it ran last time it was running' bull****.

As far as how much you should pay? Depends on what it's worth to you. If you have a cool '59 boat to match it, maybe quite a bit. If you're looking for something to hang off an old pontoon, any old big twin type would work fine.. so probably not near as much.. And as HighTrim stated^, has it had recent service?

You may also want to check out controls/harness/solenoid prices before you buy. Salvage yard link in topsecret files at the beginning of this forum would be a place to start..

No Title

Thank you all for the great info. The 1st motor that I was looking at came with controls and the guy was noce enough to even send me a video with it trying to run. The guy called me back and backed out of the deal because after he tried to restart the gears on the bottom got jammed and he said dont want to sell it in this shape. I offered to take it of his hand fpr less money since I will have the controls. The second guy that I located the outboard at stated that he had it running on hos friends boat 15 y ago and that he is sure that it will start and can start it for me. He said that he got it started like a year ago no problem. Seems like a an outboard collector of some sort. He is asking $200 which I think is too high. I am more like willing to pay $75 to $100 specially with no controls or gas tank. I am sure that any outboard that I will buy used will need carb cleaning and rebuild, Point, Coils, Sparkplug wires, Spark Plugs, cleaning and refilling the lower unit, and an impeller if nothing else. Plus got to invest in a gas tank and a battery.

After 15 years it will need a tune up for sure. Only pay running out board prices if you run it on a boat.

the reason why I am looking at this year engine is because I will be putting it on a 1960 Owens
