Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi Everybody;
Sorry about the long absence. I have been so busy that I have no time to write. Hopefully life will get a little easier; college is ending in the next few weeks so hopefully I will have a little time to write. Work has picked up to our spring/summer levels and I don’t have any more days off during the week (good for the paycheck, bad for boat building). I got to work a little last week. Also my parents are doing a huge remodel /spring cleaning for the last few weeks so what boat time I usually got has been working on their home. I also just today I put my boat in a storage yard in town closer to my home, so maybe I can get out there a little more often. I did a lot of work since I talked to you last. I basically completed the cabin. I have carpet down and I framed, and built and stucco-ed the new walls I built. I also built a rough (I am not a carpenter)but it works sink cabinet in the head. I also have an old boy scout patrol box (I was a scoutmaster at one time) that I am going to convert into my “kitchenette” it fits beautifully and the wood stain looks great. I am going to put the fixtures in the cabin and restroom next weekend so I should have the cabin completed by next week. Also my photographer quit! I guess I was not paying him enough so the photos from last week never got sent to me. My new photographer (I have no clue how to operate our new camera) I am old school 35mm. So my 13 year old daughter took these photos for me, sorry they are a little blurry and not really framed correctly but they were taken by a child so please be gentle guys!
Lastly root, I did not forget your photos but I found I need to do a little tweeking on the steering next weekend then I will photograph it.
Bill, Gus, Woody, Judge, Dev, and everybody else, don’t give up on me I really miss conversing with you all like we used to. I hope you all are well and your projects are progressing.
Yours truly
Dave

Stucco!!! Couldn't you find a finish that is a little bit lighter? That old Johnny 40 was a real stump-puller in its day but you are asking a lot. Just messing with you. As we have discussed before, get the boat how you want it and use the 40 for cruising around while your experience level goes up. Then you can deal with the amount of horsepower desired for other activities. Another check mark!

Not being critical of your "new" photographer but I cannot make out enough detail with the RR to offer any additional advice. The iboats Store has a pretty good page that shows different RR sizes and profiles. I'll see if I can find it and post a link later. See ya, Bill

EDIT: http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Accessories/dm/keywords.rubrail

Recommend you use this and possibly the Tacomarine.com website for reference information to put together a plan on how to fix the RR issue economically

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Thanks for the link Bill. I will follow up on it now.
It’s not really stucco, it is joint compound (and very little at that) Just enough for those little walls. I don’t even think I used over 4 or 5 pounds total. I bought a 5 gallon bucket and only used 3 scoops (sorry not a very technical measurement. (In the end I have almost 5 gallons of compound left). I did not even cover the entire plywood. I just added a little texture with the hawk and then knocked it down. Before I painted I could see lots of wood. Just enough to cover the plywood walls which in actuality is only a little over 2 ? feet tall. I hate to throw away all that carp, What else can I do with the stuff? Does it keep awhile in the bucket?
I really don’t think it is too heavy, and as for the 40 I am in active hunt for a twin. I have already spoken to a few people but they were not exactly what I wanted but the search is on.
Good night.
Dave

Hi Dave,

Good lookin progress...

I think I can see how your rubrail is set up...

It does not look like the type that uses and aluminum backing, instead, it looks like it uses something very similar to a U-shaped rubber weatherstrip that slips over the two lips that come together...

Make sure you take a plastic sheet & lay it down on the surface face of the joint compound to keep it from skimming over, and clean the sides of the bucket where it's exposed above the level of the compound. The debris left on the side of the bucket, when stored, can flake off & leave you crunchy lumps in the 'good' mud. The plastic helps keep it from starting to dry on the surface. Hot & cooling cycles will probably cause the mud to sweat in the bucket speeding up the fact that it does eventually get funky when stored. Funky, moldy, smelly, etc.... Make sure the bucket lip & the gasket in the lid are in good shape......

Not sure what else drywall mud can be used for, esp the pre-mix bucket variety....

Hope some of that ^^^ helps.....

Looking good Dave. Looks like you are getting close to being able to splash. Hope you get some more time to work on it soon. Work can be a real drag.

Hey Guys
What is Alice Cooper always singing about? Schools Out for summer!!!!!!!! Wahoooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
Anyways, I will have a little time after work to talk to you all again.
Thanks for all your friendship and advice.
Gus; thanks for the drawing on the rub rail I found it here on iboats (I think) it looks about 100 bux for the amount I need. Not sure on the size though.
Jb; thanks for the information on the mud. I am going to keep it for a little while longer (my wife?s honey Doo list has patching a few spots on it (now that I know how to do it); after that off to the garbage can with it.
?Drew, thanks for dropping by; I don?t know how you can afford all your new projects. I am bankrupting myself on just one. What you got 3 now?

I'm gonna break this up (turned into a loooooong post)

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Anyways, I talked to my friend who owns the little boat shop today. He thinks my needle and seat or float is…. (Something. I forgot the term). He told me to put the motor back in the bucket and have a friend turn over the motor again. While he is turning over the motor I am supposed to gently knock on the bowl with the butt end of a screwdriver. He thinks that should get it running.
I still think there is something wrong with the fuel pump also. I have the second pump off the old 75 hp (it is exactly same part). I think I am going to rebuild that one with the (new) diaphragm from the one I think is not working correctly.
Also I am going to buy a little more liquid gold (gas) and mix a new batch of fuel (paying attention to the mix ratio this time).
Hopefully I will get the motor working again.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

I am going this Saturday to finish the sink and drain line. For now I am going to only hook up to water when at a slip (if they have spigots like at an RV site). I am going to run a white RV water hose and connect directly to the faucet. At least I will have water that way. When I have more time and money I will work on a storage tank and some sort of pump. I also bought the faucet and I am going to finish the sink (it is just sitting there now). To complete the head I bought a fixture set at Wally world. It came with a tp holder, towel holder, and wash cloth ring and coat hook. I am going to hook this all up also Saturday. For a door for the head I am going to use (temporarily) a thick shower curtain and a rod. Hopefully this will all get done sat and sun. (it is nice my boat is close to home now) I can work on it both days of the weekend.
I need to buy and cut down a doorway plate to cover the transition to the carpet.

Dave (sorry I told you it was long).:D

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

I bought a beautiful light fixture in HD (looks very era to the boat) and I took it apart this weekend and made it a 12V fixture (I bought 2 tail light sockets at the auto parts place in installed them in place).
I also got the Nav light red/green with the little flagpole from the donor boat and I took it apart and cleaned and put a new fixture and bulb in it also. I wired it up to my battery just to see how it looks. Awesome. I was blown away the lenses are real colored glass! No plastic on those old boys. Lastly I need to connect the anchor/transom/ masthead light.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

I went to the mall today and I had the name/ hailing port sticker made. It looks hecka good!!!!! The guy could not have made it any better. It looks exactly how I envisioned it in my mind.
I also bought a flagpole and bracket (and flag, I guess we call them ensigns on a boat huh?)
Wow this turned into a memoir; I will break this up into a few posts.
Goodnight my friends.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Quick question I got a light on a stick for the back of the boat. The stick is about 4 feet tall. I know that it goes on the rear corner. My question do I need to have a smaller “masthead” light up on the windshield also? I have seen some diagrams and they have on smaller boats only the one light stick in the rear corner. On the bigger boats (although my boat is not so big) they have the light up top also. What do you all think I need?

Here is the USCG regs for lighting

Based on length, it has a bunch of various lighting requirements shown. You might need to check in Calif too, I know they like to put their own stamp on things:D

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Wow Dave, you've been busy! Lots of super ideas going into your "dream" boat. Before you drop $100 bucks on some RR, can we discuss it a little more? If your's matches the design Gus drew above, I did not see anything on the iboats pages that I thought would work. Can you provide a link of the particular product you identified as being suitable?

FYI, Gus's sketch stirred-up some of the cells floating around in the empty space between my ears and I believe that may be the same detail that was on my Dad's 1960 Glasspar Avalon. While I did not have to replace it, I did have to repair some damage. Can your verify that's what you are dealing with? If yes, then I have this half-baked idea that you could buy some relatively cheap black, vinyl irrigation tubing at one of the big-box stores and split it lengthwise to fit over the lip/flange Gus described.

Lots of checkmarks for you! You are doing great. Your fan club is excited and waiting for the next update. All the best, Bill

Wow! Dave, you are crankin out the to-do's like its nobody's bizzness...Way to go, buddy!...I second what Willyclay says about the rubrail...you could even look into something way less expensive and have it serve the same purpose...maybe even some heater hose, like they use on cars???
