Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Also the fuel thing seemed to work itself out. Seth taught me how to adjust the lean/rich knob. Snug down and the back off 3 and ? turns. He said that the knob had closed up. I don’t know, I did not touch it. Maybe putting the cowling back on and off a lot I might have banged it closed.
He also said that when the gas squirted out the carb… “Well you got plenty of gas”. Duh! LOL.
Anyways he told me to bring a tool kit out with me when I go, and He gave me his old Seloc service manual (I almost bought it last week from the boat shop for 45 bux). Boy I am glad I didn’t. He told me it should help me rebuild the carb….It is running now so I am not going to jinx It.

Nothing but good news being posted here today. Glad your LU problem was not major and could be corrected with a little time and attention. Be safe at the lake! Bill

Hey Dave you sure have been busy. The boat is looking good. It took me a while to speed read through the thread to get caught up. By the way, you think it is strange being on campus at 35 years old try 51. I have to admit as much as I would rather be at the front of the class teaching, I sure have enjoyed being back in printing classes verses education classes. There has been so many changes in the printing industry that I wanted to stay on top of but could not afford to bring into the classroom.
Keep up the good work you have been doing.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hey guys, thanks for popping in,
I am glad you all are here. I need to run I am running late for work. Splash was terrible. Cliff notes version: fired up motor on trailer. No problem. Launched boat no problem. Put in reverse gear and backed out 5 feet. Problem: Motor died. Drifted back to dock tied up and tried for hour to restart. In the end re-set lean mixture setting and grounded out safety kill (just to test) motor fired right up. Put motor in reverse and backed about 200 yards from dock. put motor in forward gear. Bigger problem. No forward gear. Tried to back boat to dock and could not get boat to maneuver right. It jumped and bounced around and did not like to turn in reverse. (I think heavy boat little motor) steering worked great by the way no problem turning motor side to side under power and did not hang up. I ended up jumping over board (and contemplated pulling bilge plugs while down there). And swam/pulled my tub back to dock.
Beat feet home after that. Today I can hardly walk from strain on leg muscles (man I’m getting soft). LOL.
Hope you all had a better weekend
Dave

No rest for the Wicked. I’m over my funk.
I have been reading the Seloc all night and plan this weekend to do everything in the troubleshooter following step by step and seeing where that gets me.
Hope you all are well.

Dave, sorry to hear about your motor issues. All I can say is keep at it. To answer your question on my thread, yes I am on break no summer classes for me. I am working at the student recreation center just note getting very many hours. I am hoping to make a little mony for the boat project.
Got to go.

My new driver?s side /pilot?s helm seating. Benches are rough but sturdy and I really can?t ask for better. My big old rehabbed fuel tank fits nicely under it. So I am going to mount it there and that will be its new home.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hey guys;
I hope you all are in the midst of a great Memorial Day weekend. The weather could not have been better if it tired. Low 70?s and a cool breeze; well I felt inspired today and went and grabbed dreams from the storage lot. I took out my new to me Seloc and turned to the LU trouble shooter section and went to town. The first thing it had me do was remove the prop and check the sheer pin and to see if any fishing line was tangled behind the prop? Check.
The next thing it told me to check was something called the bellcrank to see if it was worn. To do this I needed to open up the little access window on the motor and stick a pair of pliers on the shift shaft and try to move the shift lever. Well when I opened the window I found my problem, the shift shaft coupler had come apart so there was no way I could get in gear. I tried to hook it back up to no avail through the little window. In the end I pulled the LU off the motor again and took a look at the coupler. The bolt that you can use a screwdriver on was stripped and loosely spinning in the brass coupler. I found this out and ran to the auto parts store for a suitable replacement bolt. In the end they had one with the same threads and it was just a fraction longer so I took it and popped it in. The only drawback is I could not get a bolt with a slot in it. I ended up getting a normal hex head bolt and I bought a new extension for my ?? ratchet. I hooked everything up popped it into a trash can filled with water. It fired right up with no problem. Oh ya, I also re hooked the safety kill like normal. It seems to me to shift into all gears nicely. I pulled the LU off and rebuilt it in half the time I had it last. So i fixed it it seems for around 5 bux. It also took much less time than the last time to pull the LU so I guess I am learning. I wanted to say thank you to you guys, you all have been my teachers in this.
By the way Gus, I love that photo.
I?m falling asleep so I?ll say goodnight all here.

Sweet! Amazing waht a little $1 bolt can do for ya. Yet another reason these old motors rule. Try doing that with some new whiz bang darth vader motor. Happy Boating! Vroom-Vroom!

Bwwwahaaaaaa!:D

Ok, now that the cheesy melodrama is over. I took my little dreams to the lake today and she did Great! I fired it up on the trailer like last time then launched her while the motor puttered away. The water had a lot of chop today and she handled the waves like a pro. My Mom and Dad was my crew on this trip. It seemed to me to go into gear easily. (In fact it seems like it was in forward while starting up and while puttering away). I think I need to look in to it later. Anyways I backed her out of the dock and then popped her into forward (I can tell you I was holding my breath like you would not believe). I cannot tell you the feeling when it jumped into gear and the prow came up and we were off! She is not a race horse but she does not feel exactly like you are crawling around either, I think I was doing between 8-10 mph (maybe a bit more, it really was hard to tell) I did big circles around the shore/dock in case it died on me but while out there it did not falter one time, after about 30 min we headed out past the buoys and putted around out there for a little while. I think we were actually out on the water an hour maybe more.

Registerroot use my steering if you cannot come up with a more factory/modern system for your boat. I had absolutely no problems steering the boat. She likes driving forward much better than reverse. Tight little circles and big full speed circles were no problem. We did a few slow trolls down basically at idle speeds and then slid the throttle up to WOT. The steering did not freeze or lock up under full power.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Ok that was the good, now for the bad, on the way to the lake (actually all I had to do was climb the final hill and we were at the water), crawling up the hill a black Monte Carlo gets up alongside of me and a guy is hanging out the window. “Hey”, he yells, “… you know you are missing a tire back there”!
“Oh #$%@”! Said I, and then pulled off to the side of the road.
Thankfully the rim was still there and believe it or not it did not look scuffed at all. The thing really stayed off the road almost the whole time. God was with me because the single little tire was very hot, but it did not pop either. Well, great I thought, here is the end of my trip. I turned around and had to crawl back about a mile before there was a flat level spot to try to work on it.
I did not have a spare (I did not even think about one since I have not had any problems with the rubber). So I dropped the trailer and ran back to town 35 miles or so. Ran into walmart and bought a new tire already on the rim and inflated (55 bux down the drain). I also bought a tire star; since I own about 6 of them…..all of them at home of course. Ran back to the boat (again God was with me) since my boat was not vandalized in my absence.
I was ready to call it a day at that point but my dad persuaded me to keep on going.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

We left late I did a lot more construction on her today. And then by the time we got to the lake it was about 6:30 (after a 2 hour delay running to town for a tire) we stayed on the water until just dark and then trailered it before full dark.
Even though, I had the maypop issue, I would say the boat was a complete success except for this last thing that happened.
While everybody and his brother were trying to trailer their boats, I was doing little circles out in the lake waiting my turn (at very low speed). When it was my turn I gave it a little gas and the motor died. I brought it back to neutral and it fired right up again.
After I got her on the trailer (with the motor still very deep in the lake) I wanted to start her up so I could burn all the fuel out of the pump and carb, etc. It would not start no matter what I did.
Now, after a very successful, 2nd spash?really first, that last one should not count. I come away worried weather something broke again at the end, and why it would not start. Etc. No matter what I did it would not start.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Drove it home with no incident and no blow outs either? We found my old tire on the way to the walmart, destroyed.
So you see I will still be working here in dry dock some more. Sigh.
Talk to you all later. I?ll break this up into a few posts it?s really long tonight.
Lastly, my photographer took photos for us, but he neglected to put the memory card in the camera so he needs to go buy a cord to connect to the computer. So give me a few days and hopefully I?ll get a few photos for you. (I hope he can get them, it was beautiful on the water).
