Thankx Gus,

Now that that is out of the way, maybe I can relax now and not feel so driven. I know it basically works as intended, so now I just need to keep tweaking her. I installed yesterday the safety rails and the light on a stick (I still don’t know the proper term). I also mounted the switch box and cleaned up the wiring mess a little.
All the lights looked great in the dark last night.

Nice water tight box.. My only question is to protect the wires from the plastic, did you use a rubber gromet?

Real happy for you Dave and know that you are feeling very satisfied now that you are over that hump. So many check marks in today's posts that I've lost track! You have crossed the threshhold into the zone where it's not so much a project anymore but a hobby that you can make rational decisions about how much time and money you want to put into Monterey Dreams. Thanks for letting me participate, Bill

I personally still think it is considered a project (I mean seriously I am not sure if the motor will even start up next time).
No matter what, I am really grateful to you all (and especially to you Bill) for your sound advice and encouragement. You guys are the best.
Dev, I am going to use a little strip of rubber to fill in the hole (that’s about the best I can do). But I have not done it yet. I left the DIY plate and risers unconnected and just sitting in the box until I can get the hole sealed.
My dad phoned saying he found his camera cord so the photos should be forthcoming.

Hey Dave, It sounds like you had a fairly good day on the water. All the bugs will work themselves out as you get more and more used to finding and fixing problems before they become disasters. I think Willyclay is right you have crossed the threshold... Looking forward to see some of those pictures. Now I need to motivate to do some sanding on my project.

Hey John,
I was just over at your place. Motivation is the key buddy. You have a great boat; I can’t wait to watch you. Now it is your turn. I think the filling in looks great (but remember I am noob also). I never would have thought to use jb weld as filler. But it does look very smooth on your boat. I used a little on the cap to my steering wheel but I did not really like it. it was too liquidly for me and it kept dripping like wax.

All around then, regs said that it must be seen 360 degrees and higher than the nav lights by a good distance. I hope dad sends the photos soon. You guys are going to laugh. It is really a light up on the end of a 4 foot stick. That’s why I am calling it a light on a stick. I have seen the pole lights at west marine about 12” or so that plug in to a socket. My light also plugs into a socket that I installed, but the light is on the mother of all sticks (but it serves its job) you can see the light from the front over the cabin (which was the main concern).

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi Guys,

Got the motor running again today. You know this thing really has me flummoxed. I took the little window off again today and looked at my shift shaft. It seems like every now and again it gets stuck and will not go into reverse very well. It did it while I was watching through the window. The shaft bends out instead of going up and down. If I shift to forward again or 3 times or put a little pressure on the prop it will then drop down into reverse with ease.
I hooked up the big tank I had cleaned up early in the rebuild. Everybody I know has been telling me that running the motor from the gas can has been causing some if not all of problems. Today I mounted the tank on the deck, and then hooked up all the hoses. When I squeeze the bulb it squirts out the fuel as nice as you would want (I tested this) by removing the hose from the fuel pump and squirting the gas out onto the stree….er, into a government approved container! Using the bulb.
I also bypassed the start/safety (to test) by grounding out the little white wire.
The engine fired right up and ran strong although (It did lope a lot more than the last time I boated with it) for 10 min in the bbl. As I was standing at the back looking at the motor and filling the water blown out of the bbl with the hose I watched the glass fuel bowl on the fuel pump. The bowl was not staying full. It would squirt in in dribs and drabs. Like the pump was not keeping up with the draw. I have rebuilt the fuel pump not too long ago with new gaskets and diaphragm. By the time I got the motor turned off the bowl was full again!
The motor started backfiring out the compression relief valves I think. A loud pop followed by a hiss. It did this a lot. I ran to turn off the key and the motor would not shut off. I disconnected the battery and the motor would not shut off. I pulled the throttle all the way back down to idle and it eventually starved and died.
Then again it would not start. This is becoming its habit. Run good after the initial start. Turn off and will not start again.
What should I try next? Sorry for long post wanted to give details. Going to copy this for the gurus on the e&j side.

Bummer on your motor problems. You know, a 90hp Evinrude etec would sure compliment the boat well :D

See lucks not really on your side, I am facing some problems of my own on a starting fuse.. With vacation rapidly approaching I don't know if I'm gonna be able to take the old girl. Things aren't looking up since I can't find the damn cause of this stupid fuse blowing. In times like these keep your head on your shoulders and keep pushing. Goodluck Dave!

Thanks Dev,

Hope you get yours going. I've not even looked at mine in a few weeks. Bill was telling me you were having problems. I hope you can get them sorted out. Bill really does know what he is talking about.....So I have high hopes that you will be out there scraping bugs off your teeth before too long.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the long absence guys, I have been working a great deal of time this month and really no time for boat building. That being said this last weekend I did get to do a lot to Dreams.
I got sent home from work today very early so I grabbed my boat and my daughters and we went to the lake. I finally had a wonderful second splash today. We stayed on the water for 3 or 4 hours solid. I have been working on the boat over the weekend with the help of my good friend willyclay. Over the weekend again thanks to Bill’s suggestions and my Seloc book I was (finally able to take the darned carburetor off) and rebuild it. It runs like a champ for the most part. I can start and stop it at leisure. (The girls wanted to jump out in their life jackets and swim in the middle of the lake. So I let them jump out; I had a 30 foot line thrown out and told them to keep a hold of it in their hands. Also the lake was dead so there was not too much danger of other boats coming upon us, and lastly it is a very low altitude lake and the water was mid-seventies so I was not worried about them cramping up. (I’ll probably be excoriated here for allowing them off, but it was so hot out there I did not have the heart to tell them no). It fired right up in the center of the lake with no problems. It runs very well actually. It even gets up on plane!!!(It kinda scared me a little the first time I hit the throttle and the nose lifted). I thought everybody here told me it would not plane. She actually scoots fast enough for an old and little motor. We crossed the lake many times fairly rapidly. Dreams will plane at about ? throttle. (I don’t know what speed that is or anything).
That was the good; Now for the bad.
The shift cable I think is going to need to be replaced. It will not pull far enough to lock into forward gear. I tried adjusting everyway from Sunday (inside the control box and at the cable ends) and I need just a millimeter or more to get it into gear. If I run back and give it a gentle slap it locks right in. and just in case boat gear boxes throw out of gear I took a bungee and hooked it up so that it would hold the tranny in gear. I don’t know if it needed it but it felt better to know it was there.
The other main problem is that at full WOT it starts to grumble and backfire a little. Bill told me about synchronizing but my book does not give detailed enough directions on how to do it. The Seloc says all over that section to look in appendix….and there is not one in the book. I don’t know if pages were ripped out or what. Does anybody know how to tell me how to do this in plain English? The nearest I got was adjusting some little linkage of some sort on port side of the motor (and that helped a lot).
Through trial and error today; I found I can get the motor very, very, very close to WOT, and it runs great all the way from 0 to just shy of WOT and only if I push it the last little bit does she grumble. Honestly I am happy with it as it is and don’t need to go WOT at all, I did not want to push her too far, so when she grumbled so I backed down a hair. Could it be just because it is old and connected to a heavy boat? Fuel consumption was about 11/2 gallons each 45 min of high throttle. Does that sound about right?
Sorry for the long note today, I have missed you guys and just wanted to let you know what happened in my world.
Now I know really why Andrew has so many boats!!!! I am most certainly hooked after today (I think my girls are also... They kept telling me how old and ugly my boat was and how they were never going on….yada, yada, but it was so hot here today the decided that an ugly boat at the lake was preferable to a hot summer day in Fresno). The last comment they made as we got home tonight was….”So dad, when are we going again”?
HA! I won…..Now if I can only get their mother to try once….

I really had a powerful experience today (near tears) and I wanted to tell you all thanks for all the help and friendship you all have given me over the last year for without you guys I would never be here today at this point.
Dave
