Bob,
Haven't been on this site in quite a while, just discovered this thread. You are making great progress my friend. I'm watching intently now since I also have a woody I have to restore. I bought a 1953 18' Century Resorter with a 283 Flagship V8 and velvet drive, not original but not changing it! :D I also bought the Danneberg book, great asset. Your moving along nicely keep up the good work!!!!

This is one of my favorite threads, because I love the wooden boats, especially chris crafts. Keep plugging and thanks for sharing your work on here.

Guys, I have been working on the trailer for the most part lately... But have made good progress on the boat as well. I worked on it today and fitted the six pieces of 1/4" inner bottom ply. I can now seal every edge and face of those ply sheets. I need to bore the shaft hole in the keel before bedding the inner ply with 5200. They will be screwed using blocks as in the pictures, then screws backed out. They will be screwed along with the bottom planks, using bronze screws. Stay Tuned!

Thanks for your interest guys!! I have been looking into tooling for boring the driveshaft thru-hole in the keel. I read on Danenberg's site that the bottom should be planked and faired first... COOL, I'm moving further along. I can deal with the tooling later. Bob

Re: 1960 Chris Craft sportsman restoration project

Guys, I'm back to the Chris... Much of the past 6 months have included estate sales, busy days at work (thankful) enginework in a classic chevy pickup...so, I'm really into my boat right now! I need to take pics, but have begun the task of steam fitting the bottom planks. some require very little if any steam... but the front 4 planks on both sides are curled into shape like a potato chip. This week at lunch, I have been sealing the inner ply so it wont stain from the damp lumber. I'm making a clamping jig in the stem section. I will be able to shim the planks solid against the inner ply. It will stay clamped two days or so. The jig is 2x2 lumber forming an A-frame 2" above the planks. There will be 4 clamping stations and should make quick work of bending planks to shape. I'll make mahogany wedges to clamp with so not to discolor the wood. Different woods do different things when wet. Oak turns blue when wet and would really screw up some fine mahogany lumber. Stay tuned...I'll post some current pics and once again bring her back from the dead!

Guys, I steamed in the first two planks on my chris this weekend. My steamer worked flawlessly as well as my clamping jig.

Looking great so far. I love the wood Chris Crafts, there is a Sportsman project on Craiglist I am tempted to go look at but I would have no where to park it.

Blues Festival? That's my old backyard (Aptos), where is your project at?

Keep at it, it's looking awesome.
