I believe the '60 model has a thermostat. It could be that, or the water pump, or a couple of other things. Question: Does your motor spit water out of the exhaust relief in the back of the midsection?
Overheating your motor like that has probably cause multiple other problems, i.e. melted water tube grommet under powerhead, warped head and leaky head gasket, burnt exhaust cover gaskets.
