It always takes a lot of pressure off when you get good news like that. Good fortune to meet an expert who will give free advice, glad the fix will be "easy".

Truly a blessing! Technically... this motor is a freebee... so it's nice to keep the cost low here! Also nice to know that I have a contact that is immersed in the world of old mercs.... parts, service and advice. All good. :)

We'll make a MercMan out of you yet, Jim. We are gonna call you El Merco - old joke from JII. Are you still getting the lower unit or go with a weld repair?

{ have to look on my motor at the square flaming prop sticker. It has a L/U and prop with red on it and is a '66 for sure.

This is goina sound strange... but I have a bit of a "merc crush" on the 500! :jaw: I really like the sound and looks for this period of boat. Going with repair for sure... just gonna find a local guy to weld up the crack. Since the crack is in the exhaust section, it should be just fine. Technically, the motor would run fine even with the crack... but I would feel beter knowing it is done right.

The sticker (square) should be towards the front of the motor at about the height of where the steering cable goes in. Also, on the hood of the motor, it should say Merc 500 asa well has have silver handles on the hood and body).

Good to hear the crack isn't into the water jacket. Mercs are the sexy motor for sure. Johnson's are easier to get parts for though. There's something about the black with chrome that makes Mercs real lookers. Can't wait to see this boat on plane!

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild

Ok... here we go....

Received these today for the Falcon...

Thanks Glen!!

So here's the plan... Falcon will get back in the shop in a week and a half. Stripping to begin shortly afterwards!

This boat is going to be naked on the bottom and sides and polished bright! Bow and gunwales are going to be tongue and grove cedar. So believe it or not, This boat will only be painted in the splash well.... maybe! Might strip it and polish it as well!

Anyway... nice to have the little one back in the shop and ready to be restored and put back in service!

Have a great evening fellas!

It's gonna be nice to see the tach sitting on 5500 RPM and the speedo sitting about 35-40 MPH. :D

Looks really good Jim Job well done. Look forward to seeing it on the water.
On your Falcon, if you are going to leave her naked and polished, it may look good to do the splash well in that cool swirled burnished look, lower maintainence.

Thanks Glen! ---- I'm liking where you are going with this! I am going to remove the previous post and move it to the correct thread! Oops!

Hey Man!

Thanks for stopping by... ya i'm slackin' for sure on this one... this ones taking a little pause while I help build a new business and expand another! So gotta spend the wee hours of the am takin' care of business!! Plan is once the cottage is closed up in late Nov. to put an insulated floor in the shop and then over the course of the winter get the boat stripped and polished. Come spring, all being well I will have considerably more time to devote to it and get it restored for the summer.

So it's gonna be a slow start... but rockin' buy March/April!! :)

Tuesday or Wednesday should work fine. I will PM you when I know better on Monday.

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... so it's been a little bit here since last updating.... so here's where I am at:

Garage is just about done with a better sealing job around the door. I also am insulating the block wall that juts up about 2 feet --- I have found it rather cold at the front part of the garage as it is near grade or above. I also have completely cleaned out the garage to make the most out of the available space!

Boat has been named --- going to be called "Classy Lady"! The Admiral loves this name... mmmm I wonder why! I wasn't planning on getting this going until the spring... but I am missing working on a boat waaaaaaaaaaay to much. So I figure why not... I can squeeze another project in!

This is going to be a different build than before for me and perhaps a first in the Starcraft thread???!! As I have mentioned before this is boat is going to be from rub rail up cedar strip! The dash is going to be moved back towards the stern a bit and the transom is going to be a semi circle upwards instead of the current way it is now. The motor is going to be mounted on a jack plate....so it is going to be an interesting build. I have always been partial to this style of boat... so I hope that I do it justice!

Plan is to get this rolling in the next couple of weeks to leave ample time for a June 2014 Splash ---- before we go camping on the July long weekend!!!!

Anyway fellas, just that I get ya all up to speed and let you know the Falcon will live on!!!

Have a great evening!

Good to see you back Jim, sounds like you have been real busy. A little bit of MBS therapy will be good for you.

Sounds cool! Should make a nice winter project. Here's a pic of another Starcraft that did a semi-wood conversion to a center console set up.
