Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

we wouldn't flog you senselessly, there'd be a DELIBERATE sense of purpose to it.....
:D Fixed it for ya B2 :D

BTW: Nice to see the YOU back in your posts  Good bunch tonight, ending w/ this ^^^, your best of the day, IMHO....

So to slightly derail this, if we were to load up the Jewelry quotient this holiday season for the Admiral, we could expect some leeway in the new year for boat work/purchases?

IM: Please do not refer my question to the Ask the Admiral section for a response. I MOST DEFINITELY DO NOT need that sort of collateral fallout.

but gents, note the Wisdom of our TinBro: he buys a BRAND NEW Admiralwagen, which has to have bought him some slackage for boat work......

Yo B2... glad to see your out and typing! And yup... leeway accomplished! Even got asked what "Mrs Claus" should bring in the way of boat building tools! So ya, it's a way to get some leeway.... just a rather pricey one!

JB --- No worries --- promise not to mention it in Just Ask The Admiral!!!

Ok... another little tidbit of info

Us Canuks are only "state of the art" in two regards.... warm hats (aka "The Toque") and the fact that we have a national holiday on the first Monday in August called "Lord Simcoe Day". Who wouldn't want a warm hat and a day off at the peak of summer???!!! :)

My fellow Canuk... man I can't believe I forgot that one.... sometime the blatantly obvious eludes me completely.

Great videos Jim. Looks like you should be done with stripping this week. It is a good feeling to be done with that.

Well it seems that Santa is staying just north of the 49th.... got an early package myself today...

So... 8" sewn cotton polishing wheels, clay bars, rake etc and an interesting new to me but old product called Collinite No. 8845 Insulator Wax. This stuff was originally used on power lines on their aluminum pieces to protect them from oxidizing. It came highly recommended and is good for marine applications through to aircraft. It protects, polishes and seals.... thought I'd give it a try. Price was right too... $12.

If things go well, I should be able to begin this weekend...

Have a great one fella's.

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok folks....

Finished off the rest of the paint stripping this am at the very front of the boat, and tried a little polishing. I used my drill as I am going to pickup a polisher shortly... Pics are a bit grainy... I will take some better ones with my good camera later.

One pass with the brown:

I think pretty decent for a first quick pass with a drill! Interesting thing.... almost no mess whatsoever.... strange. I had a pile of rags all ready to go and well... there was only a need to little wipe with the micro fibre one I had! I'll post up some more later today or tomorrow after I try again with a proper polisher.

Have a great day fellas!

Is that the Insulator Wax, Jim? Or just the brown do far? The Admiral will always have an easy way to check her lipstick. :D

Just 1 minute with the drill and the brown bar.... insulator wax last... still have the white bar for polishing. The brown bar is for cutting. Picked up a polisher.... so will try later with the right tool. Interesting so far.... lot less messy for sure. Will see how it plays out.

Thanks BF! Ya... cdchap's looked great!!

K... little bling here....

Tools used: Brown bar then white bar.... took about 40 minutes to do that section....

I will see if I get an opportunity to post a video on this tomorrow. One interesting thing here is that I did not sand first. In the past I have.... I wonder if it would come out more evenly. I am going to try on the hull at the back where it is scratched up and see if there is a difference.

Have a great evening fellas!

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Thanks JB and GA!! GA --- should we be concerned? :()

For a 50 year boat it really is shining up pretty good! Amazing how these old crates --- and in this case, it was literally going to be scraped --- can go from mulch, oxidized tin to a "like new" condition! Let's see how things turn out over the next couple of weeks as I am able to make some time. As I mentioned, I should be able to sneak out before our hike tomorrow with the kiddos and tobogganing in the aft to make a video.

There are pros and cons to the previous way that Glen showed me two years ago and this way. This way has waaaay less crud as there are no liquids being poured onto the metal. This way my face tends to wear the some crud! You'll see in the video. I'm not sure if this way is faster or slower.... gut feel is that this way is faster. It's louder ---- cause you have to run the machine constantly. It's trickier to get into corners and when you go over rivets or the end of the rub rail you had better be holding onto the polisher or it will be launching itself!

Overall, I think I prefer this way.... it creates a brighter finish then the foam pads and liquid polish. It is a lot less mess and is less work --- I think. Time will tell here fellas.

Have a great evening!

WOWZA!!!!! She's a beaut and 40 mins isn't too bad for results like that. What is the wooden thingy next to the channel lock pliers used for?
