I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. Can you back off a bit so I can get a better perspective. Take a deep Breath... YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Lots of guys on here with NO experience at all and have done GREAT jobs restoring their boats and had much more difficult ones than yours. We'll get your thru it as long as you have the willingness to do the work.

Don't get discouraged. I know it seems like a monumental task, but focus on one thing at a time at it will all come together. From what I have researched these days people are using a closed cell polyurethane pour foam. It comes in different lb densities. If your foam is structural I have heard that a 4lb density is best. If its just for floatation you can get by with 2lb density. I am not quite sure how your deck was floating on top of the foam with nothing to support it to begin with. I would have thought that it rested on top of stringers with the foam in between them but from the pics its kind of hard to tell what I'm looking at. By the way I found a place online that had an 80lb kit of the pour foam for around $260. This would probably be more than enough for your boat and you can get it in any density you want for the same price.

Re: 1960's Larson Repairs/Restoration

UScomposites.com has the best foam prices that I have seen:
2 LB Density Urethane Foam
(U.S. Coast Guard Compliant Marine Foam)
Common Applications: Our 2LB density marine foam is recommended for void filling in nonstructural applications. This product can be poured underneath decks and inside cavities where a lightweight flotation foam is needed to provide buoyancy. This foam has been tested in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard Regulation # 33 CFR 183.114 . This foam is approximately 95-98% closed cell which resists absorbing water, however continuous water submersion can eventually lead to loss of buoyancy over a period of years. We recommend this product strictly for flotation applications. If looking for a liquid foam for sculpting or casting we recommend using at minimum our 3LB or 4LB density. More questions? Cat No. Kit Size(net weight) Approx. Coverage Price
FOAM-0204 4 LB Kit 2 Cubic Feet $22.50
FOAM-0216 16 LB Kit 8 Cubic Feet $67.00
FOAM-0280 80 LB Kit 40 Cubic Feet $264.00
5 or more kits of the FOAM-0280 $252.00 / Kit
Drum Pricing (Kit Size 1033 LBS)
Coverage: approx. 500 cubic feet Call for current price
Product Information:
Free Rise Density: 2.0 lbs per cubic ft.
Expansion Rate: Approx. 25-30x Liquid Volume
Buoyancy (flotation): 60 LBs per Cubic Ft.
*Physical Properties:
Parallel Compressive Strength: 40 psi
Tensile Strength: 30 psi
Shear Strength: 30 psi
Flexural Strength: 50 psi

3 LB Density Urethane Foam
Common Applications: Can be used as a lightweight foam for carving or sculpting as well as some limited casting applications Gives better detail than our 2LB density foam. The 4LB density should be used for better quality castings and improved strength. More questions? [Try our Foam FAQ.]

Cat No. Kit Size(net weight) Approx. Coverage Price
FOAM-0304 4 LB Kit 1-1/3 Cubic Foot $22.50
FOAM-0316 16 LB Kit 5 Cubic Feet $67.00
FOAM-0380 80 LB Kit 26 Cubic Feet $264.00
5 or more kits of the FOAM-0380 $252.00 / Kit
Product Information:
Free Rise Density: 3.0 lbs per cubic ft.
Expansion Rate: Approx. 20x Liquid Volume
Buoyancy (flotation): 59 LBs per Cubic Ft.
*Physical Properties:
Parallel Compressive Strength: 60 psi
Tensile Strength: 70 psi
Shear Strength: 50 psi
Flexural Strength: 70 psi

4 LB Density Urethane Foam
Common Applications: This 4LB density foam is suited well for most flotation applications that require more support than the 2LB offers. This foam is recommended to be used when supporting gas tanks and some deck areas. Choose this density if you feel that the foam will be required to withstand minor to moderate loads. The 4LB density also works well in floating decoy or taxidermy applications as well as many other sculpting, casting, carving and other filling applications. More questions? [Try our Foam FAQ.]

Hey Bsmith,

Cool boat you got there. Plenty of options for what to do underneath the deck. I ripped everything out and then went with a more traditional wood stringer set up. I wouldn't have had to go with that...as you can see from Coolbri's resto. His looks great and he basically redid what was there originally...only better.

Re: 1960's Larson Repairs/Restoration

Hey guys. Sorry for the delayed response. I have been really under the weather this past week and just couldn't get any work done. Thank you all for the advice and words of encouragement. I am positive that with your help I will get this project done right. It's just, as I am sure you have heard before a hundred times before, When I start to get into the unfamiliar, I get a little nervous. Especially when it's something I am trusting to keep family and friends safe when using it.

I am feeling a little better today and the weather is great so I will be headed out to try and finish as much deconstruction as I can. My plan is to have it ready for the new transom by Sunday, so we will see what we accomplish today.

I will post pics of progress later this evening. Thanks again for all the encouragement and advice. You guy are the best!

Re: 1960's Larson Repairs/Restoration

Well, I haven't done any work on the boat. In my last post I said I was feeling better and had plans to get back at it, however, I wasn't as good as I thought lol. I ended up in the hospital for a while and just got home this morning. Turns out I caught pneumonia, and it hit me pretty hard for a little bit. Now that I'm home and feeling 100% better, I will be getting back to work. I am going to move the boat into the garage this evening after our Memorial Day BBQ because the weather here has just been and is going to continue to be very rainy for a while yet. Thanks to all for hanging around during my little off time, and I promise to get back to providing actual progress posts by tomorrow.

Best wishes to all of you for a Happy and Safe Memorial Day!!!

I am wondering if you ever finished the 1960 Larson? I just 'received' one. No motor, no seats etc. Where in the heck do you find parts!?

The OP has not been here in over 5 years. Doubt you'll get a response. Start your own Thread and you'll get plenty of help.
What kind of parts are you wanting??
