Re: 1961 14' runabout

Today looks like off and on rain here in VA, so with no garage I guess no motor or boat work today . Never wanted a garage until I got this project.

man, thats a tough one.. no garage. I love my garage. problem is it's too small (2 car). of course.. even if I had a 40' x 60' shop.. it wouldnt be enough space. I tend to collect projects. currently i am working on getting some of the projects out of my garage so I can get the boat in, gotta sell an old triumph spitfire. any takers??

Got my grind on today :D It was about 70 here today in Va and I took full advantage. I will take and post some pic's tomorrow. The wife would not come close to the boat to take pic's while I was in action because the 9yr warned her about the itch from the glass :D. But she did take a pic of me before I started.

Here's the pic of the hull after grinding. I had to grind out the liquid nails to make sure it was not covering any holes in the hull, you never know with my neighbor :D The wood on the side will be removed right before putting the floor in. Right now they kinda help the hull from flexing. Does anyone see any issues with the hull floor that I need to address or am I'm ready for stringers?

KeepNitreel, thanks for posting this project! And thanks for the inspiration! I'm doing a similar project with a 1975 BeeCraft trihull. It's a runabout that I'm converting to a fishing boat. I've learned a lot from this post and others on this forum, now all I have to is get off my lazy butt and get to work.

Glad it was helpful to you and hopefully it will also be for others. For anyone who has never done a restro before & have plans on doing one, and is lucky enough to find this site.
I suggest looking at and reading as many restro threads as possible before digging in. It's nice to find boats similar to yours however I got most my info out of some threads that looked nothing like my boat. I even read & seen posted pic's of a guy who cut off his transom

KsPete, get off your lazzy butt & get to work but take your time, don't try to do it all at once. I started this restro the end of August and gave myself until March-April to complete. I have seen some new threads where there moving fast and doing quality work at the sametime and have totally past by me. Like FuzzyWiggler's Barracuda Restoration, Fuzzy did a transom & paint job at the begining of summer and used the boat for the summer to get a feel for it. Then he started his floor in October and is doing an excellent job on his restro even while wearing flip flops

Re: 1961 14' runabout

The biggest thing that keeps me from getting any work done in quantity is not having a garage here at the house to work in. I have to either work outside at home or make room at my shop about 12 miles away, that usually means that the boat only gets worked on when I'm not working on paying jobs. I wish I could have a full sized garage either at home or near by. It would sure make getting things done easier.
There have been nights that turned into morning at my shop working on my own boats, sometimes longer. I try not to do too much of that these days, its too hard to recover from as you get older. If my projects could be right at home, I could work at my leisure, not worrying about having to go home to eat and come back or being too tired to drive home.

It's been raining here for a week off an on, that not only keeps me from working at home, but it keeps me from working at my shop since I often can't push another project outside due to the rain to clear myself enough workspace for my own projects. It often depends what's in the main garage bay at the shop whether or not I can work on my boat.

I have several of my boats stored at the shop but they are in a back storage area, with little to no lighting and no heat. I have to move them up front to work on them, I do have one longer term project on a dolly that's been kept heated, but its not in the main work area.

Re: 1961 14' runabout

I've given myself until next spring to get this done. I have a shop to work out of but it's not large enough to put the boat in, so I'll have to work on it when the weather is decent. Fortunately, I think cold weather is the perfect environment to do the demolition and cleanup because you can wear lots of clothes and a respirator and not worry too much about getting over heated. I'm kinda old and fat so I can work up a sweat easily.
I'm hoping to get all the cleanup work done in the next few weeks. I have plenty of power tools to do the job, so that won't be a problem.
My brother has a nice former autobody shop (complete with a paint booth) and I'm hoping I can talk him in to letting me have some space to do the fiberglass work. He used to a lot of rebuilding, but due to health reasons had to give it up. Now he uses it mostly for storage.
In the meantime, however, I'll be doing a lot of reading... so keep posting, guys! Us newbies can sure use the info and inspiration!

I have not been on this site since Nov.14 due to the wife wanting me to put the same effert into renovating out eat in dinning area before Xmas. The eat in area is fully renovated and that should keep her off my back so I can get back to the boat. It's nice to get a post on my theard the day I come back to the site :) My whole intent with this thread was to give a play by play and to have comments from the experts to keep me on the right track. Never restored a boat before but after reading threads from this site the suprises that I come across are not really suprises because I have read & seen pic's of them all ready :D Thanks for your positive comments.

you know that neighbor didnt do that bad on the "stringers". its just to bad he didnt screw them into the hull. the fishing would be easier if you could impale a few as you went!

Here's my '58 Thompson Squire I mentioned way back about page 1 or 2. The windshield isn't the right one. I thought I could make it work, but it's about an inch too wide. I sort of like it without anyway.

Sadly, I'm considering selling it now 'cause my daughter doesn't like to ride with me. Guess I'll try to get a fishing platform instead.

Good news is that it only ever really cost me the new cables for the control box. That's the only thing that needed fixing. Cool boat. I may just keep it and double up. My wife will love that!

Made a templete for the new transom using two pieces of construction paper taped togehter & a sharp box cutter.
